None of the supermarkets round here seem to stock it (near Chelmsford, Essex) and even Waitrose let me down.

Need it for an old Jamie Oliver recipe

Do you have any Afro-Caribbean or Asian grocers near you?

tigerschick · 14/08/2007 11:40

Are you sure?
Sorry if I'm being obvious, but for ages I didn't realise that yams and sweet potatoes were the same thing - or is that just me?

speedymama · 14/08/2007 11:43

I've bought yams in Tesco!

Normally I buy them from an Asian, African or Afro-caribbean shop though.

Tiger, yams and sweet potato are completely different.

no afro-carribean supermarkets in Chelmsford as far as I know.
And the recipe requires Yams and sweet potato so no mistaking there..

What is it you are cooking out of interest? Is it red pea soup?

michaelad · 14/08/2007 14:18

it's a recipe called "Mary's Saturday soup and dumplings" by trusted Jamie Oliver. Recipe's in the "return of the naked chef" book. Sounds really yummy with beef, okras, yams, sweet p., coconut milk etc. Want to do it properly though so I need to wait until I can get all the ingredients

I'll see if I can find a link somewhere..

My parents are from Jamaica and we had a variant of that every Saturday when I was a child (not with coconut milk though).

michaelad · 14/08/2007 14:28

and is it as yummy as it sounds?

Yes, Tescos have them. We have some in the cupboard waiting for inspiration....

speedymama · 14/08/2007 14:33

It is delicious! Even DH, who is British, enjoys it and he is really fussy about ingesting foreign food.

I think I will make some this weekend.

wheresthehamster · 14/08/2007 14:35

If anyone is interested - the difference between yams and sweet potatoes

michaelad · 14/08/2007 14:38

alright, I shall traipse down to the Tesco's in town in the next couple of days and see whether they stock it..not very hopeful though..it's a rubbish branch!

speedymama · 14/08/2007 14:39

Sweet potatoes ar sweet, yams are not.

michaelad · 15/08/2007 17:44

well, I have been to 2 Tesco's branches in the vicinity and no luck re. Yams!!

Would it taste as nice if I just put more sweet potatoes in to make up for it?
Whatcha think speedymama?

Phone Waitrose and demand yams! (tell them if they're good enough for Jamie Oliver etc!)

Can't help with the recipe I'm afraid, but would be interested to know what it's like.

michaelad · 16/08/2007 08:36

I like the idea but somehow I don't think Waitrose are going to import them just for me

If I was still living in Harrow yams would not have been a problem..that's what I get for moving house..

If you get the chance would you please post the recipe - it sounds delicious.
