Worried about 12 month old

Please can anyone help? I am worried about my son who will be 12 months in a few weeks. He will not drink. He has two bottles of milk, one in the morning, one at night. Between these he will have approx 6-8 oz altogether. We give him milk in his cereal/porridge for breakfast - 4 oz. He has water in a cup during the day. It's a tommee tippee spout cup and he will have 1/4 to a 1/3 of a full cup if we are lucky. I offer him his water throught the day but he just pushes it away, even if it's been hours since he last drank. He has mashed food at dinner so he gets some fluid from that but at tea he has dry finger food but still refuses to drink much, if at all. I have resorted to giving him rice pudding and yoghurts every day to get some fluid in him but i want more variety for him and I'm still not sure he's getting enough fluid even when he has runny food and puds. His nappies are becoming less wet - he gets through 4 wet nappies a day but they are never very wet and heavy. His skin is normal and his mouth is wet but I am so worried that he isn't getting enough. Do you think I should visit my GP or health visitor? If anyone can offer any advice or has been through a similar situation I'd love to hear from you.

Many thanks
Millsy x

Hi, can you maybe try him with water with a little bit of juice in it, just to give it a bit of flavour- he might go for the sweetness. I do sympathise, I worry more when mine are off their fluid than solids. Also maybe try a different cup see if that helps.

What about giving him juicy fruits (not the chewing gum obviously) as finger foods? My DD doesn't seem to drink much either but if she has some grapes or pear then I feel at least that is something. Maybe try a different cup?

Our Ds3 is the same. He'll be 1 tomorrow and a few sips here and there is all he drinks from a cup.

I have found he'll drink anything from his big brothers sports bottles so I just let him help himself now.

I got one of the 'kids on the go' bottles as it's not such a fast flow. He'd still rather have a proper gushing/pouring sports bottle though.

Maybe your young man might like a change from his cup?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have tried juice and about 3 different cups. the tommee tippee cup has been the best so far as he will actually take some drink from it! It's just that recently he has been taking less fluid than ever and I have noticed a change in his nappies. They were always so heavy in the morning after a full nights sleep but now they are so much lighter because he is barely taking any milk at bedtime. The daytime nappies are considerably lighter too. I can't help worrying, I am a nurse and I know he isnt dehydrated but i worry that his body is compromising by producing less wet nappies. Am I just a neurotic mother?!!!

p.s. Emmatmg - happy birthday to your ds3 for tomorrow, have you got something special planned? Time flies by so fast doesn't it?

Millsy - my ds (10m) has only 2 bottle milk per day (5 oz each) and sips of water. I add milk and liquid to his food. He seems OK on this - I only worry in hot weather.
Talk to your heatlh visitor if you are worried
