Milk - past bb date but smells fine - please settle our argument!

It's been in the fridge; it's well past the best before date.

I say you can tell when milk's off because it goes sour ffs!
DH says it is Not Safe and I can drink it myself but we shouldn't give it to dd.

Please tell me I am right. Or, wrong, in which case I'll say sorry to dh.

And while I'm at it - how many days do you reckon milk you buy at the supermarket has been hanging around? DH thinks it would have come from the cow a day or two before but I am sceptical.

If it smells fine and tastes fine then there shouldn't be a problem with it.

Milk is very noticeable when it goes 'off'.

I agree that milk tastes bad when its off, but having a bad case of PFB syndrome I would never give out of date milk to DD. I just don't want to have to deal with the consequences if it upsets her stomach.

yoghurt is 'off' milk.

dh refuses to consider sell buy dates and reckons there is plenty of scope in them for non- brainers!

he uses stuff well past dates.

you can usually tell pretty quickly with milk, either by taste, smell or floaties in a cup of tea!

If it smells all right, it is all right.

I am more likely to get milk that has gone off and is wihin its Best before date, but that is another topic.

We always drink the milk unless it smells, my fridge is really cold and keeps it forlonger before going off. Occasionally i smell it, it seems fine and then DS points out it tastes disgusting. try it yourself and put it in tea, if there's anything wrong with it it will separate in the tea or taste horrible. Ds has on a few occasions drunk 'off' milk with no cosequences, DC won't drink it if it tastes 'yucky' anyway, don't worry. Of course your right

I had a visit to a dairy once and couldnt understand why the same milk being bottled/cartoned was given different dates and was told they put the dates on it according to what the different shops want !
It had nothing to do with the milk more the marketing process!!

Oh yes MrsWeasley, I am so cynical about best before dates.

If it smells OK, I would give it to adult, but not to v young child.

I agree with you - it's easy to tell when milk is past it's use-by date by the look and smell!

I find that semi-skimmed lasts for ages, because it has less fat to go rancid I suppose. If you keep full fat properly cold it also seems to last well.

I would give milk that smelled and tasted good to a child without thinking about it, but I am quite a slack mother. Much better to trust your senses than a label imo (within reason obv).

I might mention here, though it is not really relevant, that dh who is being all prissy about milk, yesterday picked up a breadstick that baby had dropped on floor, and gave it back to baby - with his toes.

Hi kathy! Im with you on this too....milk smells bad if off otherwise ok. Im sure toe cheese would theoretically be more harmful than the said milk!

FWIW yesterday hairybaby drank some milk from a beaker he'd found loitering somewhere on the floor (i think) that was defo off as it was all lumpy and yoghurty when i emptied it. He's not been sick so far and he also had a massive paddy when i took said beaker off him, so i assume it actually tasted nice!?!

re how long said milk has been in the supermarket...probably best not to think about it...i think they filter it and things so it keeps longer, plus im sure there was a programme a while ago about supermarkets just re-labelling milk that was so say past it's sell by date.
