Shepherds pie

Does anyone have a recipe for shepherds pie that has gravy rather than tomatoes?

I've tried to make it before but it always either goes too thick and sticks to bottom of dish or is too sloppy and comes through the mash.

I use campbells condensed tomato soup

I only serve up mince beef and mash thats made with minced beef (obviously!) fried, chopped onion, chopped carrot, and have been known to add chopped swede and chopped courgette. add bovril (1 teaspoon) and enough water to cover and pop in the oven for a 1 1/2 hours or so at 180. Half hour before ready add mixture of cornflour with a little water and gravy browning and pop back in the oven. Meanwhile boil pots. When ready serve as Minced beef and Mash rather than cottage pie and having to wash up another dish

lots of red wine
creamed tomatoes (like passata) for thickness rather than tomatoeyness
worcestershire sauce
cook v slowly

Iuse the packet mix. One of the only things I do out of a packet, but dp lvoes the gravy in that.

Isn't shepherd's pie with lamb, rather than cottage pie which is beef? I'm not sure if it's what you want, but here goes for my shepherd's pie recipe...

I fry onions & carrots, add lamb mince. Add some stock (low salt stock cube in water!), and a sprinkle of gravy granules (I like 'Bisto Best' cos it has a better flavour & texture than some. Simmer for a while. Add cornflour near the end to thicken. Then my magic ingredient - a spoon of Colman's mint sauce! Top with mash & cook in oven till we're ready to eat it.

To make a beefy cottage pie, I obviously leave out the mint sauce but add worcester sauce, tomatoes (I know you were trying to avoid this). Maybe your recipe would work OK with gravy granules added?

oops - yes you are right PM. I do the same recipe as I posted below for lamb but with half a lamb stock cube. But do fancy adding the mint sauce. Will give it a try

I add grated carrots and grated courgettes sometimes. Especially good if you have reluctant veg eaters.

Well I tried your recipe Pobletsmum (without mint sauce cos didn't have any) and all the gravy's leaked out over the potato!

Could it be that you're not using enough mashed potato, or that the mash is too runny when you put it on the meat mix? My gravy rises up a little at the edges, but I don't mind that. If you leave the mash a bit less milky, the sauce can soak into it a little, which is quite tasty.
