Talk to me about Camembert...

I've never tried it but always been intrigued.
What does it taste like?
There are many cheeses I've never tried.

The look of it reminds me of melted cheddar... like a fondue. Does it taste of cheddar?

Sorry! Wouldn't post, but really you should leave it out of the fridge to ripen.

cantthinkofanythingwitty · 12/06/2019 20:46

I hate smelly cheese..... camembert smells of arse!

But...... baked in the oven it is the food of the gods!

Help24 · 12/06/2019 20:48

It's how you get a bear down from a tree...

Heymummee · 12/06/2019 20:55

I like to get a knife and poke holes in it, then add sliced garlic cloves and rosemary into the holes, then bake it in the oven and serve it with warm crusty bread. So so so delicious

HarryHenderson · 12/06/2019 21:00

Right, sounds like you're all fans of it!

Got a shop coming tomorrow so I've ordered a Brie as you say it's milder. I've also ordered a selection tub of cheese which contains a small Camembert so I'll give that a try.

I've never tried many cheeses at all! I think cheddar, mozzarella, ricotta and Red Leicester are the only ones I've ever had! Blush

excellent cheese. i like it grilled on toast with cranberry now that i am pregnant and this baby just wants FRUIT and CHEESE all day.

MerryDeath · 12/06/2019 21:06

also recently baked one and ate it with homemade sourdough. that was a great success.

TanselleTooTall · 12/06/2019 21:13

Recently discovered love for camembert, here!

I bought two rounds going for 50p in my Asda as their date was up that day - not that I worry too much about best before dates.

Looked online for inspiration having never cooked with camembert before. Settled on a simple recipe to start off slowly and because I had loads of cheese 'too spare'. You can see where this is going..
Camembert toastie on the bbcgoodfood website. I ate that first toastie and I was hooked. Had toasties for my brunch the next day AND for my dinner. I had a toastie the dy after, too.Blush
I did use a luscious tomato chilli jam/chutney though, utterly decadent.
I cannot buy camembert from now on on a willy nilly as I know what I'll do.

Kwackerly · 12/06/2019 21:20

Oh god DS loves camembert, it makes the fridge reek though. Bake it with honey and walnuts and dip stuff in it. You have to eat it all very quickly or it hardens up again, in my house this is not a problem.

I repeat- it stinks- your fridge will stink and if your mum's like mine she will gag when she comes over. It is worth it.

Apparently there is an Italian cheese in a jar called broust (?) Which is so full of something it moves. Has anyone tried this? I would love to give it a go!

AdaColeman · 12/06/2019 21:21

I like my Camembert quite ripe, so it's gooey/runny, but as you are new to this delicious cheese you should try it not long after you buy it, when it will have a slight earthy/mushroom fragrance and taste.

I would leave baking it for now, and just enjoy its uncooked texture and flavour. You can get pasteurised and unpasteurised Camembert, the first type is milder, but the unpasteurised bakes better.

Enjoy! Wine Wine

effiehabb · 12/06/2019 21:24

It tastes amazing and I'm now drooling...

AdaColeman · 12/06/2019 21:36

Like all cheeses, take it out of the fridge a couple of hours before you are going to eat it. For an extra oomph of flavour, serve with black truffle mustard, a match made in heaven.. Wine

foreverhanging · 12/06/2019 21:39

Oooooo I looooove baked camembert. Crusty bread, sweet chilli sauce or sultanas on top

foreverhanging · 12/06/2019 21:40

Oh god hahaha 🙈 @DontCallMeShitley

DontCallMeShitley · 12/06/2019 22:41

Yes, it really is much better if you leave it out of the fridge......

There was a message earlier about heavy usage on the site and my message wouldn't post, but it did Grin.

DontCallMeShitley · 12/06/2019 22:43

It is really good with Millers Damsel charcoal wafers.

HarryHenderson · 12/06/2019 22:48

@DontCallMeShitley I just assumed you were incredibly passionate about Camembert and really wanted to get your point across Wink

Love baked camembert with rosemary and garlic or cranberry jam and crispy bacon. Mmmm, I'm adding it to my shopping list now!

mineofuselessinformation · 12/06/2019 22:54

I think don't has got their message across! 😀
It's lovely baked in the oven, served with cranberry sauce and fresh crusty bread.

DontCallMeShitley · 12/06/2019 22:55

@HarryHenderson, indeed I am but not quite as passionate as it appeared Grin.

I am also passionate about a good and very ripe Stilton but I will only say it once this time. (I hope).

ooohhhhcrap · 12/06/2019 23:10

HarryHenderson · 12/06/2019 23:27

Ooh, not quite sure I'm brave enough to try Stilton... baby steps Grin
