Where the hell has her appetite gone? Help - "skinny" 21 month old now not eating at all

DD is 21 months old and weighs 24lbs (nearly) and has been on that weight for ages, though she has been eating like a horse in the past.

Thursday she was having brekkie and the CM said she was sick. She picked at food all day, and didn't really eat anything. Hardly ate anything Fri or Sat. Yesterday all she had was a few spoons of cornflakes, three strawberries and a tiny bit of bread. Today she has eaten some cereal, a small bite of ham, a few of those organix crips, four raisens and TWO baked beans.

Where has her appetite gone? What is wrong with her?!! I cant really have her NOT eat because already the HV's frown when I go (if shes sick etc) because she's a skinny min.

elf as Evie normally has a good appetite if it were me I would go to the Drs just as I know how bad it was with Thomas and I put off going to the Drs thinking it was just a bug How does she seem this morning?

My sweetie did that, too. I took her to the doctor and she had me stop nursing, stop giving her milk, and stop giving her water. She had me replace those with PediaSure. I don't know if you have that in you country but I am sure there must be something similar. It is a high calorie, high vitamin supplemental drink for kids. My daughter finally put some weight on but is still smaller then many her age.

Yesterday she had one bite of a banana and that was it.

Sat and cooked dinner with me, was not interest - didn't eat her mash potato which usually she stuffs down her face.

Getting quite sad now! She even refused chocolate.

My daughter was exactly the same at around that age. I started panicking because I was sure she wasn't eating enough but went to the doctors who sad she will eat when she's hungry. Some days she would have only a couple of grapes in a full day !! Unfortunately, she's never really got any better and is now four but completely healthy as I make sure if she's not hungry for food, she doesn't get given snacks as an alternative ( although this does seem lke an easier option sometimes !! ) She sometims will only have one meal a day but then the following week she may devour everythin in sight !! My best advice for you is to relax. If she doesn't eat it, don't make a fuss, just take it away and continue on as normal. She will eat when she's ready I'm sure. Good luck

My dd is 23 months and weighs about 25lb. She has days when she doesn't eat much I try not to worry as I know she'll eat slightly more another day.

She only really eats pasta ( cheesy, tomatoey or cheese and tomatoey flavour sauce ) for tea with the odd helping of cheesy mash thrown in for a change.

Lunch is usually a few bites of sandwich and the odd bite of fruit. She does eat a whhetabix in the morning and have breast milk at bedtime and usually first thing though.

Sometimes we have scrambled egg, yoghurts cheese etc.

Look at my pics though, she's not thin. She just doesn't eat much.

Try not to worry. Lots of toddlers ( my friends children etc) go through this stage at this age.

Ok just read other posts and seen that its only been since thur. Maybe she is getting something. Chicken pox or the like?? Or she may have a sore throat.

Or she could see that its affecting you and this can sometimes make it worse. Not your fault but they notice when you're stressed/worried about eating dont they?

princessmel · 24/07/2007 14:40

Just read another one of your posts Should read whole thread first!!!

My dd has a lot of ear infections and ALWAYS goes off her food. I'd get her ears checked out as you said they loked red .

She's probably coming down with something - i give my dd dinochews (vit sups) fish oil and when she was completely off food I gave her formula milk instead of ordinary.

would second the minadex suggestion. Will supplement her and also seems to boost their appetite. Have used for both of mine when under the weather and not eating.

ELF1981 · 24/07/2007 20:36

she has eaten slightly better today though still no where near her normal amount. I did wonder about chicken pox as I went for a meeting with somebody who was then off with chicken pox, but I've already had it and din't know if that would work with ref to passing it on as I am immune if you see what I mean!
