Party food platter for a 5 year old dairy allergic vegetarian boy - HELP!

This little boy is attending dd's birthday party on Tuesday.

His mum very kindly offered to prepare some food to give to him at the party - and like a fool I say "No, no -won't hear of it. I'm sure I can rustle something suitable up"

But actually I am fairly stumped. Non diary I can do, and vegetarian I can do - but both together is something else!

Have got as far as crudites with dips - houmous etc, and fruit; but it's not very partyish.

I suppose crisps are fine (no dairy in those, surely?)

What interesting filling can I put in sandwiches. Also the bread will have to be special 'free from' bread won't it (because regular bread would contain some diary?)

Any good non diary cakes I can make?

Sorry to be obtuse!

Normal bread does not contain milk or butter. Hummus sandwiches, or salad and mayo. Crisps. Cake made with veg oil. Fruit. Little tarts made with Just Roll pastry and tomatoes. Veggie sausages. Vegetarian pate. French bread and guacamole, soya cheese.

google dairy free cake and you'll find zillions of recipes.

Egg mayonnaise sandwiches - use Hellman's original mayo or make your own to ensure no dairy content.
Supermarkets sell dairy-free chocolate cake bars and cherry bakewells - might be nice to get one of these and ice it, as he won't be able to eat any birthday cake.

jam sandwiches brilliant idea. It's party food!
Vegetarian sausage rolls? Just roll pastry plus vegetarian sausages.

Soya cheese is disgusting, however vegan cream cheese is usually ok. Don't use normal mayo! You can get vegan sausages (try health food shop) which are usually popular.

If you want to make vegan cakes, you can use various egg replacers (commercial or home made). I use 1 tbsp of ground linseed mixed with 2 or 3 tbsp of water and left to stand for a minute. Good quality dark chocolate is also vegan (check ingredients) so you could do chocolate dipped fruit.

I didn't know Jus-Rol was vegan, aloha, cheers for that

rice cakes are good, you can get apple/sesame/various flavoured ones too

There's a really nice herby tofu spread that tastes really similar to cream cheese, it's called Tofutti and loads of health food shops sell it,my kids love it

little veggie samosas/little beanburgers (my kids like these too)

meringue nest with fresh fruits in

rice crispy cakes made with dark chocolate

will keep thinking!

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:34

"if you wer nondairy you woudltn be veggie would you"

erm quite a reasonable percentage of the world eat vegan food

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:35

The egg replacers are so you can make cakes and stuff cod. Do you think children allergic to eggs should not have cake?

handlemecarefully · 12/07/2007 17:35

so Green and Black dark chocolate - would that be vegan franny?

(thanks for all the suggestions folks - gives me a lot to go on. Mind is a bit cluttered currently so was short on inspiration)

How do you make meringue without egg?

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 12/07/2007 17:36

sorry, didn't realise he couldn't have egg!

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:36

Yes G+B dark is vegan

handlemecarefully · 12/07/2007 17:36

Bit confused about bread not being made with diary - is it not made with butter then (ignoramus ?...

I can't remember the last time I attempted to make bread rather than buy waitrose finest

hellman's is non-dairy - I've just looked at mine in the fridge.
I like mayonnaise as a dip. Jennifer Aniston used to eat mayo sandwiches, but obviously not now, which is why there is a slight discrepancy between our dress sizes.

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:36

Dairy? Egg? Or just cow's milk, HMC? Sorry, I presumed egg too.

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:37

LOLOL at shop bought bread having butter in

aloha · 12/07/2007 17:37

he isn't egg allergic is he? Op did't say so. Def no dairy in ordinary bread.

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 12/07/2007 17:37

Is he egg allergic too HMC? Or is he just vegan, as opposed to veggie and dairy intolerant?

handlemecarefully · 12/07/2007 17:37

Ah in that case - very much like idea of chocolate dipped fruit

jam sandwiches - very clever, how did that simple one escape me

Little tarts with tomatoes - umm very good.
