Party food platter for a 5 year old dairy allergic vegetarian boy - HELP!

This little boy is attending dd's birthday party on Tuesday.

His mum very kindly offered to prepare some food to give to him at the party - and like a fool I say "No, no -won't hear of it. I'm sure I can rustle something suitable up"

But actually I am fairly stumped. Non diary I can do, and vegetarian I can do - but both together is something else!

Have got as far as crudites with dips - houmous etc, and fruit; but it's not very partyish.

I suppose crisps are fine (no dairy in those, surely?)

What interesting filling can I put in sandwiches. Also the bread will have to be special 'free from' bread won't it (because regular bread would contain some diary?)

Any good non diary cakes I can make?

Sorry to be obtuse!

Is Hellmans mayo dairy free? No eggs??

Home made oven chips - slice potatoes into wedges, (skin on) roll in olive oil, sprinkle a little salt, put in oven.

Baby sweetcorns cooked hot.

Veg skewers - baby toms / sliced courgettes / etc on a skewer, roast.

marmite in sandwiches. Vegan margarine.

Chocolate crispies - use dark choc (has no dairy) and make with cornflakes or cereal that has no whey / skimmed milk - i don't think cornflakes or rice crispies do?

Flapjack with vegan margarine?

Mild samosas.

Would he eat things like dolmades?

vegetarian samosas sound nice. actually this is startign to sound like a good party, and I'm not even vegetarian!

SoMuchToBits · 12/07/2007 17:38

Salad things (tomatoes, cucumber),
Sandwiches with egg, houmous, marmite, jam, but be careful to get a non-dairy spread for the bread, as most margarines contain buttermilk or whey powder. You can get "Pure" spread with either soya or sumflower oil in supermarkets.
I made jam tarts and biscuits using the pure spread instead of butter/marge too. They worked quite well.
Breadsticks
Crisps
Grapes/other bite sized fruit.
Raisins.
Veggie sausages, veg samosas, felafels.

No he isn't egg allergic. He is dairy intolerant and vegetarian (rather than vegan)

I am making rather a meal of this aren't I (ha di ha!)

Will check thread later - now have to have dinner with lo's in the garden (chicken and cannellini bean casserole in case you were wondering)

cod, eggs aren't strictly a dairy product, are they?

HMC, is he vegan, or can he have eggs?

rebelmum1 · 12/07/2007 17:39

tell the mum u can't do it and wouldnt want to risk a reaction, no eggs too is really tricky, i'm dairy and gluten intolerant but i'd struggle with a vegetarian dairy and egg inolerant bday food

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 12/07/2007 17:40

x-posts!

aloha · 12/07/2007 17:40

If you just did this sort of food everyone could eat it and nobody stand out.

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:40

Ah sorry. That makes your life a lot easier I reckon.

Cod if you are saying being vegetarian gives other people the right to bully you then you are really going to fuck me off.

handlemecarefully · 12/07/2007 17:40

I think the diary intolerant as far as his mum meant was mostly milk products - but really must double check that

Blu - thanks very muchly, got the biscuit garland yesterday

Felafels are delicious. Esp with tahini and pitta bread.

Ooh lots of things.

aloha · 12/07/2007 17:41

Eggs are NOT dairy! Chickens aren't cows!

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:41

They have mini felafels atm in M+S for 99p. They are quite partyish

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 12/07/2007 17:41

mmmm, felafels with houmous and wholemeal pitta and salad and lemon juice....

rebelmum1 · 12/07/2007 17:42

poor kid to make him vegetarian too thats cruel

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:42

Yes it was me getting confused about the dairy / eggs thing. I thought he was, effectively, vegan. I think having eggs gives you a lot more leeway.

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:43

"poor kid to make him vegetarian too thats cruel "

that is an ignorant and offensive remark

Kif · 12/07/2007 17:43

pasta salad

Ds does have a friend who is vegan. He has been to ds's party, so I did all the things I have listed, but did alternative sandwich fillings for the non-vegans, and meat sausages. It wasn't that much trouble really, and I don't think most of the kids noticed that one boy was eating some slightly different stuff. We also had a vegetarian egg-free person at the party and a pork-free person, so we tried to be flexible with everything.
