Party food platter for a 5 year old dairy allergic vegetarian boy - HELP!

handlemecarefully · 12/07/2007 17:21

This little boy is attending dd's birthday party on Tuesday.

His mum very kindly offered to prepare some food to give to him at the party - and like a fool I say "No, no -won't hear of it. I'm sure I can rustle something suitable up"

But actually I am fairly stumped. Non diary I can do, and vegetarian I can do - but both together is something else!

Have got as far as crudites with dips - houmous etc, and fruit; but it's not very partyish.

I suppose crisps are fine (no dairy in those, surely?)

What interesting filling can I put in sandwiches. Also the bread will have to be special 'free from' bread won't it (because regular bread would contain some diary?)

Any good non diary cakes I can make?

Sorry to be obtuse!

Yes it offends me. It really offends me to say that following your ethical beliefs and not eating dead animals is cruel. It fucking does.

and cod, you know I am NOT easily offended

rebelmum1 · 12/07/2007 17:45

btw houmous would have to be homemade shop varieties can have dairy in

WanderingTrolley · 12/07/2007 17:45

lol cod's carrot

I'd work from the other way around:

do all sandwiches dairy free
ditto hand around veg sausage rolls etc
make as much veg friendly as poss
make his lunch as much like the other children's and a) he won't feel 'different' and b) you'll save yourself a lot of bother

You need to check the listed ingredients of everything for an allergic child. You could be amazed at what does contain dairy. Skimmed milk powder, whey starch etc - all to be avoided.

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 12/07/2007 17:45

LOL at vegetarianism being cruel, som of you really need to get out more, or read the odd newspaper or something.

I think there are some great suggestions on here. I wish I was invited

aloha · 12/07/2007 17:46

OK Sarnies for everyone - egg mayo/jam/peanut butter/hummus

Snacks - felafels, mini veg samosas, crisps of various kinds, breadsticks & maybe guacamole and hummas dip
veggie sausage rolls/little tarts

Sweet stuff - grapes, chopped banana, raisins in boxes, dairy-free chocolate slices etc from supermarket. Tiny meringues.

Sounds OK to me.

Most shop bought hummus does NOT have dairy in

if I go like this anymore my eyes are going to roll out of my head I think

questioning - fine

calling it cruel and saying it sets kids up to be bullied - fucking offensive

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:48

LOL you are ganging up on me cod

I have ds here saying "read this book mummy"

no am too busy shouting at internet sprites

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 12/07/2007 17:49

Roflle @ "soem wuiestioning of your freaky wasy"

I've never come across houmous with dairy in it. How bizarre. I'm fairly sure it would split, wouldn't it, what with the raw garlic and lemon juice?

aCowSpeaks · 12/07/2007 17:49

Vegetarianism is not cruel.

PS. Moo.

rebelmum1 · 12/07/2007 17:50

just thinking about the child btw it's tough enough coping with intolerances without adding to the problem. i was vegetarian before i became gluten and dairy intolerant finding a healthy well balanced diet is really tricky u need to be everso comitted - i just wouldn't impose my beliefs onto someone else like that but each to their own. You can buy meat that has been ethically kept and killed.

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:50

It does, very occasionally, have hummus in, I have seen it

But 9 times out of 10 shop bought hummus is vegan

LOL @ Moo

off to read Rosie's Babies, guard the fort for me here would you Greeny?

bundle · 12/07/2007 17:51

vegetarianism could be seen as a bit cruel to veg

FirenzeandZooey · 12/07/2007 17:51

Vegan food is piss easy

and "ethically killed"? That's a good one

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 12/07/2007 17:53

Is "ethical killing" a bit like "loving smacking"?

rebelmum1 · 12/07/2007 17:57

Obviously I've touched a nerve, I juggle with intolerances and make everything from scratch as you can't trust the content of bought foods and you may risk a seious reaction if you get it wrong. sorry if i caused offence.

SoMuchToBits · 12/07/2007 17:58

At least it's a bit easier these days now most prepared foods are very well labelled.

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 12/07/2007 17:59

I make most of our food from scratch too. Can's see the relevance of that to the discussion we're having - there are loads of delicious options on this thread which can easily be made from scratch. And some which you can get reliably dairy-free commercially.

rebelmum1 · 12/07/2007 18:16

not everyone knows how vigilant u have to be, or that hummous contains dairy. thought that might be fairly relevant as i dont know many people who make it themselves.

ELR · 12/07/2007 18:19

marmite peanutbutter

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 12/07/2007 18:20

But houmous virtually always doesn't contain dairy. It's not one of the usual ingredients.

I appreciate your point about the need to be vigilatnt though, not arguing with that at all. But I think the OP realises that, hence the thread being started in the first place.

aloha · 12/07/2007 18:21

Hummus doesn't contain dairy though. Looking at my sainsbury's hummous...nope.

pippo · 12/07/2007 18:25

organix range for older children is good for biscuits/crisp type things etc if you haven't got time to bake.
