I have never made a fish pie before. I have looked on the internet but all seem to include a load of ingredients i dont have in. I need a basic recipe please.

Ingredients: fish (your choice) prawns if wanted, potatoes, milk, white sauce, flavourings.
Poach fish in milk - season with a little pepper. You can add herbs such as parsley if you want and can use different fish - smoked and unsmoked and add cooked prawns.
Make a white sauce from the milk you have used plus a little more.
Peel, cook, mash potatoes and add milk/butter.
Put fish mixed with the sauce in bottom of dish. Top with mashed potato (you can grate cheese over this if you want or just fleck with some butter).
Bake until slightly browned on top (it is all cooked anyway so this is just to reheat and make it look better.

There is a good one in Annabel Karmel's Toddler book - Nursery Fish Pie. I'll see if I can find it (meant for toddlers good for adults too ).

I make mine like Lilymaid.Sometimes I add a chopped boiled egg to the fish, and sometimes I add sliced tomato before topping with potato. Also, if I can't be bothered to mash the potatoes, just slice cooked potatoes over the top. Also sometimes mix breadcrums or crumbled weetabix (it works, honestly!) with the cheese to give a crispier topping.

The same but you can also add some (uncooked) veg to the mixture eg. peas, tinned sweetcorn, chopped leeks v. good too.

ooh yes, leeks, have done that. Gorgeous. And a bit of bacon.
(Hope we're not frightening you off it sherbert, Lilymaid's recipe makes a really tasty pie on it's own, the rest are absolutely optional.
