I am going to give up sugar - anyone want to join me?

Sugar makes me tired, grumpy, unpleasant, grouchy, sluggish, greedy, etc. etc. etc. oh yes and fat. I gave up for lent and after a few days of dreadful withdrawal I was teporarily a nice person till I fell off the wagon. I need to do it again but it's hard. Anyone want to join? Today is Day1. I have nothing with sugar in the house and haven't been shopping, so far so good .

no. i like it.

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 12:43

Yes well me too, but it doesn't like me.

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 12:49

No one then?

OP posts:
Bainmarie · 04/07/2007 12:51

Did you feel much better for giving it up? I am far too weak to I think!

Legacy · 04/07/2007 12:52

I'd love to, but I have had it in tea for about 30 years now, and apart for 3 weeks when I used sweetener and lost half a stone I've never been able to give it up. I can do coffee without sugar - but tea - bleugh - it just isn't comfrting and fulfilling...

How are you going to start?

OrmIrian · 04/07/2007 12:54

Yes. I've been doing this for years now...with the occasional lapse But my normal diet is very largely sugar free. And I feel better, more energetic and slimmer. I actually get sugar hangovers these days if I've overindulged. I clambered back on the wagon on Monday after a week or so of it. Cravings and hunger pangs disappearing now.

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 14:57

OrmIrian it's good to know it's possible, I did do it for a bit over lent and it worked well, but I didn't manage it all the way up to easter. How do you manage to keep onthe wagon, after falling off it's taken me months to summon the courageto try again. I am truly an addict, I go buy chocolate specially and hide it from my DH as he doesn't like my habit. Yesterday i couldn't do anything until I'd got my fix.
bainmarie, like Orm I did feel far more energetic and happy. Also the weight fell off, I don't eat such a bad diet apart fromthe chocolate, so by rights I should be a size 10 if I didn't eat so much - that's wishful thinking really but it would be nicer to have clothes that fit.
Legacy - I'm just going to go cold turkey, the thing with sugar and me is it seems to be all or nothing. i don't have sugar in my tea or coffee anyway, but it's no biscuits, chocolate, sweets, cakes and basically anything else full of sugar which I'd end up eating as a substitute. Ifound last time I had to be strict or I'd apply the - well it's not really sugar - test and eat all sorts of c**p instead.
I've already nearly had a sweet, DD got in the car after pre school and asked for a sweet ( we have some in the car as I bought a big bag the other day and justified them as 'travel' sweets) She said 'I'll have an apple one' and I was thinking 'I'll have a cherry one'. OMG it's hard.
Any advice to get through would help, but I'll keep posting if anyone wants to have a go with me. Asort of sugaraholics anonymous thread if you like.

any other takers?

I will cluttered up - I have done this before like you for a few weeks and felt a great deal better.

I have an unhealthy relationship with sugar - I really like it and crave the surges it gives me. Will start tomorrow though as today is already sugar filled.

I am going to stop all refined sugar and white carbs - but still have fruit.

I don't hold out much hope for myself though.

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 15:55

oh great -welcome bleedinggums - I'm notorious for not fininshing things I've started, that'swhy i thought i'd start a thread - to embarrass myself into continuing. I gusee this should have had a lead up rather than throwing it a people - perhaps we'll make tomorrow official no sugar day to start- we can try and keep a counter going. I'd really like to do 100 days at least but i think that's a bit ambitious what with trips to the seaside in the summer- mind you haven't felt much like ice cream recently!

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 16:06

so just the 2 of us then?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 04/07/2007 16:07

i really need to. i'm a sugar fiend but the thought of it scares me tbh. may start cutting down sugar in coffee/tea.

BBBleedingGumsMurphy · 04/07/2007 16:08

that sounds great - maybe we could go for 10 days but allow say 7 days off during that time?

My worst is late night when the children are in bed., I try hard not to have stuff in the house but have sugar radar and can always find something when I need it.
You going to do juice and fruit or not?

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 16:11

oh yes juice asnd fruit are ok, that's good for you sugar - as in it doesn't satisfy my sugar craving, but obviously not too much juice.
come on southeastastra give it a try - my worst is when dd2 has kept me up in the night-thenI crave the energy rush and i tell myself i need/deserve it.

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 04/07/2007 16:11

no way! but I wish you luck cluttered

SpacePuppy · 04/07/2007 16:13

good luck, you'll no need to read all the labels to see which foods have sugar added. Too much of a hassle, I just cut visible sugar, i.e. tea, coffee, dessert etc.

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 16:13

bgums did you mean 7 off in 10 or in 100? i hope youmeant 100 - yes a few days off is a good idea then it's not a failure its just a respite and then you can keep giong.

OP posts:
southeastastra · 04/07/2007 16:14

i can take or leave chocolate but tea/coffee and cereal will be hard! i love sugar on my cornflakes!

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 16:15

spacepuppy i think i'll go for the obvious sugar, if it's not really obviuos like baked beans i'll allow it. life's tooo short, i'd never succeed - gotta go ds2 just been sick all over me yeuch

OP posts:
Eddas · 04/07/2007 16:19

So do you mean just cut out sugar in tea etc, and no chocolate, cakes and things? Coz if so count me in I'll and crisps to my list to as i'm fairly partial to them too.

How about things like diet coke (i NEED it to go with my vodka)

Eddas · 04/07/2007 16:21

that should say add crisps not and

I am typo queen!

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 16:26

I reckon Diet Coke is alright and alcohol - the sugar isn't suagar any more it's turned to alchol, any way I need something to keep me going - and yes this is a no sugar challenge so crisps are alright. Welcome Eddas and never mind the typos I'm pretty good at them too. Got to do early tea and swimming lessons now - and change as covered in baby sick- but will be back later. All welcome the more the merrier.

OP posts:
Eddas · 04/07/2007 16:38

Ok so i'm in then. Have been doing this since monday as I need to shift my baby weight.

So Tea now has sweetners in (Tesco's own as all others seem to taste bleurgh)

No chocolate, no biscuits but as I was pg over easter i did eat an immense amount of chocolate then so I guess i'm due for a break

I hope that this can keep me on my diet as I have absolutely no willpower, not even a small amount

Earlybird · 04/07/2007 16:39

Are Hermesetas/Canderel etc OK?

mylastrolo · 04/07/2007 16:45

can i join too just after ice-cream and have big sugar cravings so as of today I am cutting out crap!!! Didn't buy any choc crossants this morning and they were all in work. although did buy twix after salad lunch.... really need to lose weight and get some will power. So stopping sugar is a start.
