Sugar makes me tired, grumpy, unpleasant, grouchy, sluggish, greedy, etc. etc. etc. oh yes and fat. I gave up for lent and after a few days of dreadful withdrawal I was teporarily a nice person till I fell off the wagon. I need to do it again but it's hard. Anyone want to join? Today is Day1. I have nothing with sugar in the house and haven't been shopping, so far so good .

Sure thing earlybird, if its not sugar then it's OK - although I think i'llsteer clear of those sugar free sweets cos I think if you eat as amny as I do then it gives you an upset tummy ( sorry didn't want to try to spell diarrrroooeea!) Welcome and come and join us.
Welcome mylastrolo- you might want to change your namethough as I may try to eat you soon!

southeastastra · 04/07/2007 20:27

i'll experiment with a coffee without sugar in a min haha

WriggleJiggle · 04/07/2007 20:28

I'd like to join, but am not convinced I'll manage it. Certainly couldn't avoid all sugar, but would like to stop having sugar in tea/coffee, biscuits etc.

WriggleJiggle · 04/07/2007 20:30

Oh HELP! Just discovered how to make LDC. I presume a little helping of LDC is acceptable? Maybe I could start with just one item with sugar in a day (instead of the 30 or so I usually have)

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 20:33

do come and join us - what is LDC?

OP posts:
WriggleJiggle · 04/07/2007 20:45

Lemon Drizzle Cake . Its just sooooo yummy

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 21:08

oooh nooo please don't you're teasing me - mind you can you make it with sugar substitutes or am i really trying hard to get out of this already? NO LDC here please - well not tomorrow anyhow! < tutting finger smiley> tsk tsk

I should do this...I need to do this....but, am I ready to do this? Especially given that we're moving house in 10 days time...?

clutteredup · 04/07/2007 21:25

in 10days time? OK so you may fall of the wagon for a bit whislt moving ( forgiveness will be all here) but you may find it helps - it gave me more energy and that might help with the move- just warn you there is a withdrawal period, that should be over well before your move. Come on, give it a go, you're very welcome.

Last chance anyone? i'll post a new thread tomorrow - probably after school run, not likely to be able to do it sooner and bound to be in a bad mood!

Donk · 04/07/2007 22:55

OK I'm up for it!

Kaloo20 · 04/07/2007 22:59

Wow what an achievement this would be, I can't go for 4 hours without sugar.

I'll join but I'm not committing to any duration, I'll take each day as it comes and will count any sugar items I stumble on.

I will 'fess up each evening.

Good Luck for tomorrow everyone

clutteredup · 05/07/2007 09:40

First da/week thread here Posted in health, thought it might attract a few more. See you there

Some people are very sensitive to sugar. A lot of programmes for people with depression include cutting it out - see places like www.radiantrecovery.com and www.promis.co.uk/content/eating/eatguide.php

It's actually quite hard to be rid of all sugars because a lot of products have sugar substitutes too like aspartame. Even non sugared breakfast cereals usually have quite a bit of sugar except basic porridge oats.

Sugar has the same effects on me. Some people it doesn't. It depends on your individual biochemistry. I don't have any added sugars but lots of fruit (which is I think frutose) and some sugar substitutes in some drinks. But much better for just having those so I suppose technically yes I'll join in.

I think the promis programme does it from day 1 and the radiant recovery one has a longish period starting with eating a protein/carb breakfast and very very slowly working down to no sugar.

burek · 05/07/2007 09:58

Clutteredup - I'm up for it.
Did it for a few days last week but not long enough to feel a difference. My downfall is black coffee which is so difficult to drink without sweetness (and no I will not give up my coffee )

So, as of right now... sugar free

jeremyvile · 05/07/2007 09:59

Good God no!!

But thanks for the offer.

OrmIrian · 05/07/2007 11:46

I think that fruit juice needs to go too. It's quite concentrated sugar without the fibre that you get in proper fruit. Ditto dried fruit. Fruit is better in it's natural state. I'm not afraid of using some artificial sweeteners but try to keep them to a minimum. Once you're 'cleaned' of sugar (can take a week) it all becomes much easier.

Nuts are a good nibbly snack.

mylastrolo · 05/07/2007 13:27

forgot!! and had choc sprinkles on cappucino this morning but that's ok no sugar but then gave sugar up years ago in tea/coffee so that doesn't really count!!! My new name isn't really appropiate i will be tempting us all as you say clutteredup.

so just had lunch cheeseham toastie wholemeal bread. going to have some strawberries now with d/d who is having her preschool injection at 2.30 has to be done. Have told her she can pick a treat in shop afterwards for being a brave girl!! that will be hard for me.

Judy1234 · 05/07/2007 14:42

Most shop bought fruit juices have some kind of sugar/sucrose or artificial sucrose in them. Drinking water is probably best.

OrmIrian · 05/07/2007 16:40

xenia - have to disagree there. I work for a juice manufacturer and anything that says 'pure' juice is concentrate and water and nothing else. There are plenty of juice drinks that contain other things though. Not that fruit juice needs any added sugar - contain shedloads already.

hoolagirl · 05/07/2007 18:37

Funnily enough I also have started trying to cut out a lot of sugar, I check food labels as well to see how much carb sugars and try to go with the lowest options, is that too extreme for this thread?
