How does one cook a savoy cabbage?

Never cooked cabbage before
dd1 has been begging for 'cabbage like they have at school'

so I assume that you voil it but for how long
she says she has it in chunks

so I cut it up before I boil it or do I steam it?

I shred it and steam it. About 5mins so still a bit of bite.

You can boil or steam - 5 mins at the most. Cut it up before you do it. Even nicer with bacon bits in!

do you htink school cabbage would have a 'bit of bite' though

if I want it less bitey (very fussy eater is dd1, she wants it EXACTLY) would that be 7 or 8 mins then?

OOh lovley mixed with cream , bacon bits and nutmeg. ( Not very school dinnery)
School dinners + boiled until teh colours gone!)

If it's like they have at school, I'd guess it's white cabbage chopped into chunks or short strips, and boiled to within an inch of its life (a good 15 minutes if not more, until it smells of farts.) For myself, I'd have savoy and steam it for just a few minutes until it's tender.

Not the usual school dish to want at home, I must say!

You could also slice savoy into thin shreds and stir fry with a bit of chopped bacon and sesame oil. That's quite nice too.

You can shred it and microwave it. 5 mins in a little water so it steams (with a lid on) Then drain the water out and add a little lemon juice and olive oil, toss so it's all coated and then microwave for another 5 mins before seasoning and serving.

You can also add chopped onion or garlic or herbs at the half-way stage.

Otherwise you can remove the largest leaves and cut out the large veins from the middles of them, blanch for under a minute in boiling water (to make them pliable) then make little parcels of them with a mix of rice or pasta, fried onion, mushrooms, curry powder, peas, mango chutney, sultanas, pine nuts,whatever you fancy. Place in a shallow ovenproof dish and cover with passata and grated cheese, bake till golden - you've got a full meal there if you fancy it.

I normally kill the cabbage because mine love it soft and mushy with gravy.

I steam it, probably for around 10 minutes, if not a bit longer (but I have a steamer on the hob not one of those electric jobbies)

I have a steamer on the hob thingy too
I'm thinking just on it's own (lovely sounding recipes but dd1 wont touch them)
for about 10 mins probably

keep testing it till it is all soggy. For some reason, that's the way a lot of children like it best! (even I still like it that way - years of soggy cabbage at school entrenched in me!)

Imust admit I thought it was odd that it was the soggy cabbage she was asking for
first it was kiwis but they are really nice so wasn't so strange
good that she is loving her fruit and veg though
