Do you buy UHT or fresh?

Can you please explain your milk choice here?

I am slowly converting back to fresh after spending much of last year in France where only unpasteurised was available fresh. What's the difference? They are all heat treated these days.

I tend to buy goats milk too because I hate the taste of cow's. (much needed correct apostrophe placement there)

I buy UHT skimmed for me and DH and fresh full fat for ds. I buy the UHT mainly because it is cheaper (value stuff is something like 35p per litre) and also because it lasts for yonks unopened and we never run out because of this. The big BUT here is that DH and I don't drink it as milk IYSWIM but we only use in cooking or on cereal etc. I buy fresh milk for DS as he is still of an age where he should be drinking full fat milk but UHT full fat (or indeed semi skimmed) is VILE and I wouldn't expect him to drink it! Oh but wait, I do buy UHT full fat but only for making yogurt in the yogurt maker. It means I don't have to boil the milk up etc and can just use it straight from the pack.

My goodness, I had no idea that my milk choice was so complicated!

Fresh full fat and semi - it's readily available at all hours round here.
On holiday, i usually manage to find fresh full fat in the bigger french supermarkets.

Fresh skimmed cow's milk from the milkman. Delivers a pint every other day.

Tried organic a few times too but I don't like the way is tastes.

in a cafe i always ask for real milk. i think they see me coming.

elasticbandstand · 29/06/2007 13:39

UHT skimmed for me (which I think tastes nearly same as fresh semi but lower in fat)
Fresh semi-skimmed for DH
Organic fresh whole milk for DS

BettySpaghetti · 29/06/2007 13:47

I don't like UHT but we do always have an emergency one in the cupboard.

In the fridge we have fresh full-fat for the DC and fresh semi-skimmed for us. There is usually soya milk too which DD alternates with full-fat to keep her eczema in check

I buy full cows milk, organic and local milk (i do my bit to suport local farmes)

We get through alot of milk as i drink a glass a day.

portonovo · 29/06/2007 15:52

UHT is the work of the devil - disgusting in taste.

We buy unhomogenised organic milk - that way we can either use the cream off the top like we used to as children, or shake it up and mix it in.

Unhomogenised is supposed to be easier to digest, don't know if that is true.

We buy mainly semi-skimmed but some full-fat which is just gorgeous. Skimmed milk just isn't worth buying.

Whoooosh · 29/06/2007 15:55

Fresh organic skimmed here although we do have some UHT organic skimmed in the cupboard for emergencies.
Nowhere in the village stocks organinc so if we don't buy enough fresh in the supermarket it may get used.

suedonim · 29/06/2007 17:00

We can only get UHT here. Dd never drinks it, though she'll eat porridge made with it. Can't wait to get home and have some fresh organic milk!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 29/06/2007 17:17

We have fresh semi-skimmed delivered. And after I nagged the milkman it's now organic too.

I usually keep a carton of UHT for emergencys.
