what's PKU?

LucyJones · 26/06/2007 11:53

it is what the heel prick test is for. It always surprises me when people don't know what it is. Do people ust let the midwives stick a needle into their babies heel and never ask why?!!

LucyJones · 26/06/2007 11:53

pku

LucyJones · 26/06/2007 11:54

My friend had it and just saved up his quota of normal food for the day if he was going out for a meal so I wouldn't worry too much.

suzywong · 26/06/2007 11:55

I let the midwife have her way with my babies, both of them. Needles all over the show

LucyJones · 26/06/2007 11:56

sorry I didn't mean to sound so sanctimonious
It really is nothing like me but that post did come across terribly!

As I had forgotten what it was (not very common so don't know anyone who has it) - PKU

I've got one!

this link was very useful

Tapioca Puddinng with Molasses sugar and strawberries
serves 4

In a pan, soak 100g of tapioca (it will be dry and beady and available from health food shops blah blah blah) in 1 400ml can of coconut milk for 30 minutes.
Slowly bring this to the boil, simmer for 10 minutes and then stir in 40g of caster sugar and 50g of molasses sugar (very dark brown sugar, the darkest you can get) and the zest of one lime. (heat the lime in the microwave on medium for 10 seconds first as this brings the oil out and thus the flavour). Cook slowly for 2 minutes.
Pour this into a gratin dish (shallow dish, glass or ceramic) and allow to cool
Cover with and even layer of molasses sugar, burn under a very hot grill creme brulee style.
Leave to cool at room temperature - not in the fridge
Decorate with sliced strawberries
