How do I make a red fruit compote?

Friends to dinner on Sat. The dessert will be Chocolate Hazelnut Torte with red fruit compote. My recipe book tells me how to make the torte but not how to make the compote. Help please!

Heat fruit with icing sugar until juices start to run out, then pass through a sieve.

CD is right, that is a coulis That is what I usually make with a chocolate torte.
