opened a jar to add some to potato salad at the weekend. What other dishes can I add them to (apart from fish pie/fishcakes and similar).

eww .......the bin

sorry, not helpful at all

BreeVanDerCamp · 18/06/2007 19:38

Take the capers, unscrew the lid.

Walk with purpose and determination.....to the bin and drop them in, do not even stop to consider recycling the glass jar.

Capers are boak

Tin tuna, 2tbls oil, juice 2 lemons, tbls capers (chopped), small amount dried chilli, 1 clove crushed garlic, salt & pepper to taste. Mix & fridge overnight. Add to pasta - yummy. We do make it with fresh tuna (1 steak between 2) but also tastes good with tinned.

UCM · 18/06/2007 19:42

I once did a Gary Rhodes recipe which involved putting them in mashed potato. It was rather yum.

Or make some tartar sauce.

BreeVanDerCamp · 18/06/2007 19:42

OK............ look at the posting name.

She has a hidden agenda.

UCM · 18/06/2007 19:42

Sorry didnd't read the op. You have already capered your spuds.

BreeVanDerCamp · 18/06/2007 19:42

Berries that is, not UCM.

policywonk · 18/06/2007 19:44

Very nice with ripe melon and parma ham, or on pizzas. Yum.

popsycal · 18/06/2007 19:46

Capers look like berries, she is just trying to keep a mate in a job.

BettySpaghetti · 18/06/2007 19:49

I love them sprinkled on a simple salad or on pizzas.

Or how about simple bruschetta (made with savoury muffins, split and poped in the oven/under grill with garlic butter, tomatoes, olives, capers and mozzarella)

DS (2) and DD (7) will eat them as they are by the handful

lilolilmanchester · 18/06/2007 19:50

love the sound of the tuna thing berries. Also UCM hadn't thought of adding to mashed pots (even tho had added to pot salad) so thanks. Would never have thought of melon/parma ham policywonk (would love to know the story behind that name!)

thanks BettySpaghetti. All ideas extremely useable so far. This is the first time I've received so many responses - who'd have thought capers would generate so much interest? Take it MN having a quiet night tonight!

policywonk · 18/06/2007 19:53

I'm getting a lot of of this! A policy wonk is a politics geek - an adviser/researcher who works in government and thinks up new policies. It's New Labour slang, I think, but probably originates in the US.

Sorry, that was dull, wasn't it? But you did ask

lilolilmanchester · 18/06/2007 19:58

just showing my ignorance then policywonk! Think it's a great name.

Ta

Berries · 18/06/2007 20:07

I can assure you I do not look like capers, or maybe my best friends haven't told me

brightwell · 18/06/2007 20:28

Delia's pasta puttanesca uses capers, I double the amount.

PestoMonster · 18/06/2007 20:30

I usually have them with sliced tomato, avocado & mozzarella salad. Include black olives and capers and drizzle with dressing. Crusty french bread on the side.

Yum

lilolilmanchester · 18/06/2007 22:46

ooh, yum to both. Thanks Pesto and Brightwell. Chucked some into a prawn/bacon/mushroom/pesto/pasta sauce tonight. Will try out some of the other ideas (not sure why I ever bought such a big jar!)

OP posts:
mamama · 18/06/2007 23:16

Chuck them in a salad or on a pizza.

Or cook some pasta, drain, add butter, lemon juice, black pepper & capers (maybe some cooked chili & garlic)

Yum.

moondog · 18/06/2007 23:17

God I love capers.Fantastic with grilled red peppers and crumbled fetta with vinaigrette.
Also mixed through pasta with smoked salmon and creme fraiche.
