I'm not much of a cook, but I volunteerd to make a cake for someone. I've made a plain sponge with strawberry jam and butter icing in the middle.

What should I do for icing on the top? More butter icing?

More butter icing would be nice. Or just some plain icing sugar and water icing drizzled on. Or just sift some icing sugar over?

i would just cover it in fondant, but if you don't have any butter icing will be fine.

royal icing you do with egg white instead of water. Dunno about regal - presumably same thing?

fondant is sugarpaste, also known as ready to roll icing

royal icing sets hard, amd has egg white in - not really suitable for a sponge.

I would do more buttercream, or just icing sugar sifted on the top if it were me

icing sugar on top IMO - not keen ontoo much buttercream - but them the cake's not for me is it!

If you've got butter icing in the middle - definitly just icing sugar on top is fine.

You'll need to force it through a fine sieve though, or it'll come out clumpy! I often use our little tea strainer as it has a finer mesh than our sieves.
