Because you get things you wouldn't otherwise get. And it is quite exciting not knowing what you are going to get.

Probably is quite poncy, but it is our only bit of ponciness probably.

nickytwotimes · 06/06/2007 11:13

i don't understand them either. they are a bit poncey imo.

Enid · 06/06/2007 11:14

oh no they are quite good

but I cancelled mine as the veg was all rotten in the winter

chevre · 06/06/2007 11:15

the money goes directly to the farmer and not the evil supermarket.

i used to get one but then got fed up feeling guilty about not know what to do with an undersized squash, 2 beetroots and 50 potatoes.

NineUnlikelyTales · 06/06/2007 11:15

What is poncey about getting stuff direct from the supplier and avoiding supermarkets? It's all in season and makes you eat a more varied diet because you have to use up stuff you wouldn't necessarily have bought. I had a veg box for 3 years until they stopped doing them in my area and it was fab.

I loved getting ours, but didn't always use all the veg, especially the lettuce/cabbage so we stopped getting it. But I did love it.

If our greengrocer did organic, I would definitely always go there, but they don't. So I do a mixture of the greengrocer and Waitrose.

Not poncey.

bozza · 06/06/2007 11:17

LOL at me being poncey.

tortoiseSHELL · 06/06/2007 11:17

I also like the idea that it's relatively local, and not picked a year previously.

Malaleche · 06/06/2007 11:17

do you mean organic veg boxes? in Spain like in some parts of the UK and the health food shop charges 3 times as much for the same vegs, actually from the same supplier. We worked out that the veg box costs about the same as buying non-organic from the local shop. We dont have a car so tend to shop in dribs and drabs and have to haul it all up the stairs in the pram, so having a week's supply delivered is a bonus. This way i know that everything in my fridge is organic, most of the time and that i am giving the DDs the best start...

oops, bit missing econd sentence should read: 'In Spain organic veg is not for sale on every corner like in some parts of the UK'

tortoiseSHELL · 06/06/2007 11:19

Bananas I have to buy from waitrose because they do fairtrade ones, and my order of preference is
Fairtrade
Organic
Local
Normal

purplemonkeydishwasher · 06/06/2007 11:19

low carbon footprint
good quality produce (only one rotten pineapple in about 2 yrs of getting box)
variety of fruit/veg encourages me to experiment with stuff I would not perhaps normally try
can choose different size box each week
it arrives on my day off delivered to my door by nancy or her lovely assistant francis
they bring organic milk/yoghurt too
and wine if you like

not poncey, just convenient, good food

NotQuiteCockney · 06/06/2007 11:21

Surely reducing our intake of pesticides is good?

Anyway, I get a box because:

  • I don't drive, so shopping is a hassle
  • the box means our fruit and veg intake is naturally varied, rather than me just buying the same things week after week.
  • I like the no-airfreight thing, and the fairtrade thing.

I don't think I've found MSG or trans fats in my box. (And, ahem, we don't all drink like fish - I drink perhaps 4 or 5 units per week.)
