Our veg box comes from half a mile away. It's cheaper than the supermarket veg, and tastes a lot better.

and I love curly kale.

Well I have just eaten a rather nice sandwich of brown pitta with cream cheese, roast red pepper (Asda) and homegrown rocket. I had to buy the pepper because literally no fresh food in house because we were on hols last week.

bozza · 06/06/2007 12:31

But I am still a bit hungry so might nip to M&S in my lunch hour and buy some fruit.

thehairybabysmum · 06/06/2007 12:41

Im guessing that the pineappleas and sweet potatoes fro the veg boxes come on the same boats as those you find in the market or shops...they wont have special transport for veg box schemes. So inthis respect you may as well just buy said pineapple from wherever is cheapest.

Fair enough if your veg box is local...but that still doesnt meanthte veg is local , if so surely all you are getting atthe mommetn in that case is asparagus, broad beans and kale and new potatoes if you live in jersey or cornwall...other than that no veg ready yet judging by my allotment that is! If you are getting old potaoes then they will have been in cold storage since sep...and sprayed with inhibitor to stop them sprouting!

bozza · 06/06/2007 12:45

Well we are getting cucumber, lettuce etc this week. I assume the cucumbers have been grown under glass. But I would have thought the lettuce was outdoors. And also tomatoes which are imported. Spring is supposed to be the hardest time of year though isn't it? We are also getting imported carrots, Uk broad beans, UK spring greens etc.

bakedpotato · 06/06/2007 12:45

this is what my smallholder friend is harvesting/putting in his boxes this week: rhubarb, asparagus, salad leaves, pot of growing basil, spring cabbage, spinach, the very first tiny broad beans and a jar of honey.

katelyle · 06/06/2007 12:49

Because we really like getting unidentified root vegetables covered in mud on a weekly basis that forces us to make enormous quantities of not very nice soup no one wants to eat and which we then have to palm off on our elderly house bound mother who isn't in a postion to argue!

IntergalacticWalrus · 06/06/2007 13:02

It's not local.

The veg box thing by me comes from Devon.

I live in Bath. Think of all the petrol used to transport it

Nuff said.

I go to my greengrocer, where it is local. And thery alwys give DS1 a free banana

MamaG · 06/06/2007 13:04

we have a veg BAG scheme running through school

not posh enough for a box

£2.50 for a bag of veg

or salad

might join./

all the "local" ones I tried were pants (rotten veg, little variety) so we went for Devon one too. their analysis of carbon footprint pretty favourable. and no air-freighting.

Twinklemegan · 06/06/2007 13:12

I'm fed up of buying overpriced, imported, flavourless veg that have been in cold storage for about ten years.
