Help!! Suggestions for a cow/ farmyard themed cake for 2 yr old?

mamama · 02/06/2007 19:06

My friend has designated me official cake-maker for her son's 2nd birthday. He is obsessed with cows but I have no idea how to make a 'cow' cake or anything farmyardy. Any ideas? Plleeeaaase.

Other acceptable cakes would be:

Tools
Fire Truck (an American one)
Elephant

Thanks in advance

Large square cake iced green

With small plastic farmyard animals (cows?)

can you make fences with chocolate fingers (make crosses stuck in the cake and lay a 3rd finger between 2 crosses

Ok, that would work - thanks Katymac

Or if you are feeling adventurous

You could put a large swiss roll in the centre of the board

Put 4 mini swiss rolls like legs (as if he had fallen on his belly?)

Make a head out of a muffin - ice on details and stick (something - I can't think what) in as horns??

You could cover it all with icing before doing the face and sprinkle dessicated coconut (dyed green) over the board

Agree with Katymac's idea - dead simple yet effective. If you haven't got a large enough cake tin, line a roasting tin.
You can pick up packs of plastic animals in pound shops (you might also get plastic fencing in the pack but fences made of choc fingers/matchmakers would go down well with the kids). You can add coconut to green butter icing to get more of a grass effect, but a lot of kids don't like coconut (maybe do some "grassy patches?" ) And if you have ducks in the pack, a tin foil pond?
Tools/fire truck/elephant - wouldn't go there!! Katymac's suggestion is much easier

do you have any barnyard mcdonalds figures?
i second the coconut grass and choc fingers fence.

I've had a farm one given me for my b/day many moons ago. There were two square sponges. One was on the bottom, the other was cut at an angle and placed on top to create a slope side with a hill. It was all green and it had little trees, a cow or two, sheep, farm buildings etc figures on it and fences, too.

Matchmakers are a better size than chocolate fingers

familygirl · 02/06/2007 19:35

Some more ideas...
Cow cowprint
bit trickier Farm cake
Great animal decorations
Similar to other suggestions

Familygirl, know where to come when I want some cake ideas (tho mine are probably too old to want them!) The "similar to other ideas" is so simple, but REALLY effective. Just shows, doesn't it?
Mamama, let us know what you decide on and how it goes. Picture would be nice...

katz · 02/06/2007 22:24

fences work best made out of matchmakers, stick them together with melted choc.

Malaleche · 02/06/2007 22:26

maybe you could just make a large quantity of chocolate mousse and sort of drop it from a height onto a plate? sorry, in a silly mood tonight....

FrannyandZooey · 02/06/2007 22:27

Desiccated coconut dyed green looks completely marvellous as grass if that helps

onlyjoking9329 · 02/06/2007 22:37

yep coconut does look fab, i have just made 2 cakes for my twin girls birthdays, i know have multi coloured hands

onlyjoking9329 · 02/06/2007 22:39

i love the cow print one.

mamama · 03/06/2007 00:47

Ok - am going to send all those links to my friend so she can pick. I love the cow print one and it does strike me as the easiest, but the 'similar to other suggestions' might be apprecaited more by the birthday boy.

Thanks everyone!

Ummm, Malaleche - if I were making it for my Dad, he would definitely enjoy your mousse splatting idea...

Iced white cake from any supermarket. But some black royal ready rolled icing. Cut out cow patch type shapes. Thats it really can't think of anything else.
