I make daal quite a lot, but it never tastes as good as the ones you get in Indian / Pakistani restaurants - you know that really runny, almost smokey flavour you get. I'm going to bed now, but I'll be back tomorrow so if anyone could pass on a favourite family recipe, I'd appreciate it. PS I've got all the stuff - asafoetida, curry leaves etc - so it doesn't matter how obscure the ingredients are, as long as it tastes good!
