any suggestions for cheap BBQ food - please

After DS1's birthday party next Sunday I'd arranged for our family to come back to ours for a BBQ - only DH has now invited loads more people.

Any ideas on how to feed 16 adults & 7 kids cheaply? I won't have much time to prepare either as DS1's party is at our local gym from 1-3pm.

Many thanks

Baked potatoes (someone just suggested them on my Christening food thread!).

Sausages.

Veg kebabs.

ask the guests to bring something - salad or burgers or whatever - I think that is perfectly reasonable.

What about good quality burgers and sausages? Sounds like you really don't want to be faffing about, so I'd go for straightforward stuff tbh.

whole sardines/mackerel, baked potatoes, salad.

this is going to sound really stupid - but can you cook jacket potatoes really slowly.

Like could I put them in before the party & they won't be burnt lumps when we get back?

Yes you can - if I'm doing this then I tend to wrap them in tin foil whilst I'm out, then remove the foil once I get home and give them 20-30mins to crisp up a bit.

get a load of prawns, skewer them on those wooden sticks and bung em on the barbie

What about bbqed polenta? - could use it alongside meat and it's cheaper too!
Make your own burgers - I did lamb and mint ones for a BBQ recently - just minced lamb, some chopped fresh mint leaves and a bit of onion and cumin (did all in blender then squished in with meat). They went down a treat and were way cheaper than pre-made ones.
