baking bread- what's gone wrong?

Just handmade a loaf and some rolls with the kids... but it has ended up really hard on the outside, and not much dough on the inside...
what did we do wrong?

Did you allow to rise once, knock it back and allow to rise again?

Cd did that- but was doing with the kids- so probably not as efficiently as would have otherwise!

aha but it was one of the 'activities' (see playdate strand!)
don't think the machine would have taken as long!

Not enough water perhaps. A wetter dough is always better than a too dry one. (of course, spot on is the best!)
