They do usually have a roll/ sandwich but I have sent them with other picnic type foods before and its never been a problem.

Today they had a piece of quiche each, little pot of colesaw and a couple of cherry tomatoes and the school phoned to say they have to have sandwiches or a roll.

Asked them why and there was some mubbling about cutlery but I had put a picnic fork in like I do a plastic spoon for a yoghurt.

Did suprise me as they take something other than sandwiches at least once a week. Can anyone think of a reason why they are now stopping this because I'm a bit annoyed and the more I think about it the more pissed off I'm getting.

I would have been sorely tempted to just put the phone down.

If this is the most important issue that they come across all day and feel the need to call you about it, then they have a better life than me!

Nightynight · 17/05/2007 13:18

Am shocked - that is the sort of thing that I might put in for my children.
What about children who just dont like sandwiches?

hayes · 17/05/2007 13:24

I think what happened is another child saw how lovely it looked and their roll looked a bit unappetising

think that is a bit much, my dd takes in salads or wraps and says all her friends wish they had that. Maybe the school wants everyone to be the same?

FrannyandZooey · 17/05/2007 13:35

I do understand people's concerns about the schools interfering too much in what you put in the lunchbox, but the explanation from the school made sense - checking to see if there was a sandwich or equivalent. Of course on this occasion they have messed up because the twit who checked the boxes was obviously clueless, but in general do you not think schools should flag up a concern if a child has an inadequate lunch each day? I remember some very sad stories from teachers on other threads about lunchboxes, with children being sent with the most inedible / unsuitable lunches. I don't mean pepperami and so on, I mean just not food you would ever think of putting in a lunch box, and not nearly enough

Would they have rung you if you had popped in a packet of choc chip cookies and a can of coke?

FrannyandZooey · 17/05/2007 13:50

No I also agree about the phoning. I mean the whole thing has been a total cock up and I would be cross. I was just replying to the people who seem to think that any message from the school about the content of lunchboxes is unreasonable.

tarantula · 17/05/2007 14:11

Have to agree with Franny that this is obv an over zealous or clueless dinner person who has not been properly briefed and what the school are trying to do is raise the issue of kids who are not getting a proper lunch. It is a serious issue as it can impact on kids learning ability and on their behaviour.

(the Korean dish is Kim Bap BTW and is yummy. you can get it in lots of shops in New Malden Anchovy if you have a fancy for it Big Korean area that)

ask to see a copy of their policy/guidleines. offer to write a set for them (they won't have anything). get something off jamie's/negella/ someone lese poncy's website and send it to them. or give in, for gods sake your children eat real food, what do you expect?

haven't read the whole thread but bet it was the school secretary that phoned wasn't it!!! Never had a problem at our school actually with what they take but they did once complain that ds1 took nuts into school, but at the time there were no children there with a nut allergy....

bozza · 17/05/2007 15:37

oh yes I called spinach "italian leaves" when I made Lisalisa's lasagne/feta/spinach dish. DS ate and enjoyed it before I confessed.

And both my children eat quiche. But DS has school dinners so I don't have these kind of problems.

Kim Bap!
That's it!
New Malden is bil's fave hangout.

(Er...Welsh scrutiny too Anchovy!)

TwoIfBySea · 17/05/2007 21:53

Could it not be that you have just raised the standards ConnieD?

All those kids with their limp little sandwiches looking longingly at yours with their lovely picnic. Must have been a near riot!

I like to vary what my dts have for lunch and at the beginning of the school year the headteacher said about the only thing they weren't keen on the kids having for lunch was chocolate, crisps and fizzy drinks. Other than that anything goes.

Actually you can get loads of wonderful Korean delicacies (and Japanese ones) at the japanese food stores in Acton. There is one just opposite Ealing common tube station and another just next to West Acton tube station. Also the Oriental cash and carries (HooHing on the North Circular and another one whose name I can't remember next to ASDA in North Acton) have a wide variety of Korean and other oriental foods.

It's very possible that the person who checked your child's lunch thought that the quiche was cake. Believe it or not, I have met many adults in who have absolutely no idea what quiche is.

mamama · 27/05/2007 19:25

Sounds ridiculous to me - if all else fails, quiche can be eaten with fingers anyway. I wonder if the school has a packed lunch policy? I am very surprised that the school has nothing better to do than complain about this.

I think your children are lucky to have such varied lunches.
