They do usually have a roll/ sandwich but I have sent them with other picnic type foods before and its never been a problem.

Today they had a piece of quiche each, little pot of colesaw and a couple of cherry tomatoes and the school phoned to say they have to have sandwiches or a roll.

Asked them why and there was some mubbling about cutlery but I had put a picnic fork in like I do a plastic spoon for a yoghurt.

Did suprise me as they take something other than sandwiches at least once a week. Can anyone think of a reason why they are now stopping this because I'm a bit annoyed and the more I think about it the more pissed off I'm getting.

Well, I just phoned them back and they are going to call me later apparently.

Crazy!

As long as you are providing a lunch (and a fairly healthy one at that) who are they to declare what you can and cannot feed your children?

foxinsocks · 16/05/2007 13:22

NO not you iota! I meant ConnieDescending (always makes me think of CunningLinguist)

Ceolas · 16/05/2007 13:22

I just don't get how they can impose rules over what you feed your own child

AitchTwoOh · 16/05/2007 13:24

LOLOL, they are having a laugh, surely? they should be impressed at the fact that your child will eat quiche, for starters. give 'em hell, connie.

Londonmamma · 16/05/2007 13:28

real kids don't eat quiche

I am gobsmacked that they would tell you you HAVE to pack bread. Extraordinary!

Could it be that some parents have been sending in eg just crisps or just a packet of biscuits so they've imposed this rule to protect the undernourished one, but don't have the wit to adapt it to children like yours??

morningpaper · 16/05/2007 13:29

I would send them in with quiche EVERY day

let's see how far they will take it

never let it be said that we don't have time for political activism!

Troutpout · 16/05/2007 13:30

Dd rarely takes sandwiches.
She usually has some cooked chicken nibbles (pop chicken or chicken strips) some cucumber, a slice of swiss roll , a carrot and sometimes crisps (she isn't a fan as a rule) but this week she has been taking a bagel or sausage roll.

brimfull · 16/05/2007 13:54

are you being serious?

Furball · 16/05/2007 13:57

send them in with dairylea lunchables

BettySpaghetti · 16/05/2007 13:58

Thats ridiculous!

We send DD with pasta or rice salad, slice of (homemade of course )pizza with tomato and cucumber salad and various things like that.

Imagine the monotony of a sandwich/roll every school day from aged 4-16

TooTicky · 16/05/2007 13:59

Crazy!!!! I don't give mine sandwiches every day as it's so boring, especially if they only like one or two fillings. Ds1 took a couple of potatoes and some chunks of cheese today.

MaureenMLove · 16/05/2007 14:00

What a ridiculous rule! I trust you are being called in along with all the kids who have crisps, chocolate spread on white and a fruitshoot! Can't wait to hear their explanation. Are you being called in today?

TooTicky · 16/05/2007 14:00

Obviously he didn't just have potato and cheese - that was just his sandwich equivalent.

They were obviously bored or they have a "lets see what we can moan about this week" list.

I cant believe they would waste their time calling you about this.

twelveyeargap · 16/05/2007 14:33

What complete muppets. If you're giving your child a healthy lunch, what do they have to complain about FGS?

What about kids that can't eat bread? Do they have to have sandwiches too?

PeachyChocolateEClair · 16/05/2007 14:48

Do schools actually know anything about nutrition?

Just asking coz at ours they ahev to bring a healthy Snack (only fruit or plain biscuits allowed- I usually send dried fruit to save on tupperware).

the current most popular item is.....

Peperami.

Obv. a lack of netters at trhe school, but firtunatley my noys wisedd up enough to know that they are NOT a healthy snack (the term 'when you have peperami in your lunchbox is used in our house as a substitute for when hell freezes over, and the kids get it)

(DS1 asked his friend who takes in 2 a day the other day, 'which part is in your mouth now? The wee wee or the eyeball? LOL)

SherlockLGJ · 16/05/2007 14:53

Connie

Take no prisoners, that is ridiculous.

So.... in order to satisfy the school they are to have a narrow remit of food and this could quite possibly lead to them becoming entrenched in their views on food.

SherlockLGJ · 16/05/2007 14:54

Sorry that statement is not very well constructed but I know what I mean.

barbamama · 16/05/2007 14:55

How ridiculous - tell them they only have sandwiches twice a week due to the high salt content in bread, that will shut them up. And wht if your children had a wheat allergy or something?

UnquietDad · 16/05/2007 14:55

They PHONED?
To tell you THIS?

My reaction would have been, "Excuse me, do you have too much fucking time on your hands?"
