I have Bento boxes and the beautiful wrap cloths in my multicultural resources for the children I childmind, and we use them too. Ofsted commented on them in my inspection report!

I use chinese dishes for them when they have rice or noodles too. One of my littlr ones loves mussels for lunch and she uses the shell to eat them with, because that ais what she does at home!

Chelseamum · 14/05/2007 08:49

Bento is the Japanese version of a packed lunch, usually taken to work and school by adults and schoolchildren alike, as a convenient and nutritious meal. Traditionally, it is a meal divided into two parts: one half of the box will be filled with rice, and the other half will be filled with a variety of accompanying foods, such as vegetables, fish, eggs, or meat. A well balanced bento will consist of rice to side dishes in a 1:1 ratio, and within the side dishes a 1:2 ratio of fish/meat to vegetables.

Perhaps I shall take a self portrait the next time I'm trying to defrost some milk for breakfast cereal whilst DD (11) is trying to escape out the front door with make up on and saying she's not hungry. I think my face at such times, would be far more intersting than Bento boxes. So there.

NutterlyUts · 14/05/2007 08:51

Compo:

O-bento' is what the Japanese call a packed meal, usually lunch. Bento boxes have internal dividers, and sometimes several stacked layers, so different kinds of food sit in their own little compartments. (This is nice if, like me, you don't necessarily like to mix flavours!) The whole thing is usually wrapped together with chopsticks in a cloth or special bag, and the goal is to make the whole package as attractive as possible - from considering the colour combinations of the food and presenting and garnishing it as neatly and artfully as you can, to co-ordinating the box, chopsticks and wrapper, and any other items like paper napkins, knife and fork or spoon, drink flask or thermos.

Shmoo Mom tells you what he ate and what he left

she also tells you if he made any especially adorable comments about it
