veg kabobs?
haloumi cheese is nice bbq'ed

Nbg · 08/05/2007 11:38

Yep veg kebabs. Get some of those wodden scewers and stick on some peppers, mushrooms, cherry toms, aubergine, courgette etc. You could even marinade them before hand for extra taste.

Do you eat fish? If so I always recommend a Jamie Olier styleee fish thing. Get a whole fish or a large portion, drizzle in oil and season to your taste, wrap in newspaper and tie with string and BBQ! Gives a lovely smokey flavour.

corn on the cob

PrettyCandles · 08/05/2007 11:39

Brush corncobs with olive oil (herbs/spices/garlic/balsamic vinegar etc as well, if desired) and grill directly on rack, but cooler side of bbq.

Halumi cheese mmmyummm!

Falafel (can be heated on the bbq) and houmous dip.

Oh and my other BBQ special.
New potatoes, par boiled, drizzle in oil, salt and pepper and fresh rosemary, wrap in silver foil and BBQ.

lucy5 · 08/05/2007 11:42

slice courgettes nearly in half lengthways. Stuff with whatever you like. I do goats cheese and sweet peppers or roquefort and walnuts, etc. brush with oil and wrap in foil. put directly on to the embers for about 20 mins or so until the courgettes have softened. Yummy.

KTeePee · 08/05/2007 11:43

I always do veggie kebabs (even for the meat-eaters) - but don't do them on skewers as it is so fiddley - I have a sort of basket thing that I put chopped peppers. onions, mushrooms, courgettes and cherry tomatoes (essential) into.

wurlywurly · 08/05/2007 11:43

oh we're getting new potatoes so will give that a go.

Dont know about fish TBH, we are all meat eaters, its only really my nephew and his gf that are veggie.

remember to do veggie stuff on separate bbq or first to avoid contamination of meat juices and smell ( it is awful whne frineds go to trouble but you can't eat anything because it has been cooked with meat products

hoxtonchick · 08/05/2007 11:44

i wouldn't assume they eat fish.

wurlywurly · 08/05/2007 11:45

yep got a seperate bbq to cook it on, just have no ideas when it comes to veggie stuff.

what is halloumi cheese like?? have never had that

OP posts:
Whoooosh · 08/05/2007 11:47

Large flat mushrooms stuffed with blue cheese or garlic and some other type of cheese if they don't like blue.
These can be done directly on the grill or wrapped in foil.
I brish mine with butter before hand and often add a slice of beef tomato under the blue cheese.

wurlywurly · 08/05/2007 11:50

ooh the mushrooms sound nice

OP posts:
hoxtonchick · 08/05/2007 11:52

it's kind of very solid almost plasticky (!) cheese, from cyprus. it's very salty, & kind of squeaky when raw (god, it doesn't sound very nice does it), but delicious when grilled or fried. you should be able to find it in the supermarket.

wurlywurly · 08/05/2007 11:53

ok will get some of that to try, do you think i could out in on the large mushrooms and then on the bbq??

OP posts:
hoxtonchick · 08/05/2007 11:54

i'd do the halloumi separately. it's really easy, you just slice it & cook for not very long (dp is the vegi & chief barbequer in our family......).

Whoooosh · 08/05/2007 11:55

Oh no you MUST griddle the haloumi!

Bruish with oil and it doesn't take to long.
You could of course put it in the mushrooms post griddling...

Ceebee74 · 08/05/2007 11:56

Halloumi cheese cooked is just gorgeous!

Also, Ainsley H has a recipe for bbq enchilada type thing - you mix cheese, tomatoes, spring onions, coriander, toasted pinenuts and a green chilli together and wrap it in tortillas - then roll them up, wrap in tin foil and place on the bbq for a few minutes so all the cheese melts etc - fantastic (if you want the exact recipe, quantities etc - let me know and I will find it for you)

wurlywurly · 08/05/2007 11:56

right so i have halloumi cheese and large mushrooms added to my list. My nephew will have a go at anything but his gf is sooo fussy as well as being a veggie(and now pregnant as well)
