If so, how fiddly is it - decorating etc. Also, is it a single layer cake? Does it come with sponge recipe?

Thanks

I've made my own, with pre-coloured icing, icing "pens" for the details, smarties for the buffers, liquorice wheels for the wheels, and cotton wool for the smoke. It looked homemade - but still pretty impressive and ds is blown away by them! Did Thomas for his second birthday (he'd just started his fascination with Thomas) and Henry plus tender for his third birthday, using Nigella's buttermilk birthday cake recipe. I'll be doing Edward this year!

Oops - Gordon is 4, so that's you I'll be doing.

where do you get a Thomas tin?
I need to make my own cakes as DS allergic to egg
and I'd be really interested to see one

Thanks everyone .... think that's what I'll do. DS has a nut allergy so I like to do his cakes myself ... enjoy baking anyway - although last year's cake was a 'simple' fondant iced affair with clown cutout and it took hours and hours by the time I dyed the paste all the different colours!

Alison222 ... Partycakeshop.co.uk has novelty tins in train & tractor etc shapes.
