ds1 has his first tooth coming through and won't eat anything except porridge and sausages

No idea why, but is there anything else he may eat as substitutes? He's gone off soft vegetables, pasta, cheese and rice. HE's one, by the way.

First tooth at one? That is late! Sorry, just had to say that, knowing it is totally beside the point.

Umm, I thought crunchy wet things like raw veg were supposed to be favoured by childen with a tooth coming?

But what I used to do was put teething gel on the offending spot just before offering food and I found that helped soothe the pain.

I'm not sure I'd bother TBH. I'd mix some pureed fruit into the porridge but for a few days I'd indulge him with a ew bits of veg with the sausages to keep him on the straight and narrow!

yes, I've had months of people saying "where are his teeth?" Not sure what i could have done about it really, short of getting him dentures.

But because he's a bit older, he's very specific on what he will and won't allow near his mouth.

he;s not normally a fussy eater at all - he eats what we eat, which is why this pickiness is strange.
I think his tooth is hurting him - he keeps whacking the front of his mouth and shouting crossly. He's drinking loads of milk still - just had a sausage and two bottles of milk for lunch!

dd was 11.5 months and then got 8 in one week!

i agree with pennies btw, leave him to it for a few days and don't worry

feetheart · 11/04/2007 18:00

Friend's DD was 14mths before she got any so he's not that late!
I'd also say let him get on with it though offer him some different things too. If he's usually a good eater he's probably suffering a bit and just wants comfort food - don't we all

AitchTwoOh · 12/04/2007 15:04

you could try frozen peas or celery straight from the fridge. or frozen slices of orange as well. porridge and sausages sounds lovely though.

My first didn't get a tooth until she was 13 months. I'd just stick with sausages and porridge. Stick some apricot in the porridge? Use veggie sausages?

bozza · 12/04/2007 15:11

but oranges he is no different to any other child that is getting their 5th or 6th tooth at that age. I think I would try different things and see if he will eat some more and I think dg's idea of the calgel or whatever is very good, and worked for me.

fridayschild · 12/04/2007 15:31

I think they are more used to it by tooth 5 or 6 though, my vote's with the porridge and sausages

oranges · 12/04/2007 15:55

veggie sausages - what a great idea. He had some gnocchi and brocolli for lunch, so seems to be better, though he insisted on gnawing raw garlic too. (don's ask how he got hold of it)
