What are your favourite slow cooker recipes?

It's slow cooker season in our household. Wondering what you cook in your slow cooker? Share any favourite recipes? Have you thrown a load of stuff in from the fridge and had it turn out amazing and become a favourite recipe?

I'm making the last of a piggybacking meal today. It started with a roast chicken dinner, then I made stock from the carcass and carrots and celery etc, then we had chicken and stuffing sandwiches, then I made a pork stew in the slow cooker using some of the chicken stock and the vegetables from it. Using the last of the stock in another stew today: thrown in the chicken leftovers chopped, six pork and beef sausages, leftover roast veg, leftover gravy, chopped leftover sage and onion stuffing, a small bottle of cider, herbs and spices. No idea what it'll taste like! Will report back!

I don't have a recipe as such but pork cheeks are amazing when cooked in a slow cooker. I used to make stew with them.

Germgirl · 04/09/2017 16:27

Meatballs. Just the uncooked ones you buy in the supermarket, although on occasion I make my own, chuck them in with a jar of pasta sauce, I use Loyd Grossman Tomato & Basil and about half a jar of wine. Cook on low all day or high for four hours or so.
It's not really a 'recipe' as such, but it's lovely, the meatballs are so much better in the slow cooker than cooked any other way.

We're having the stew for tea. The stuffing has melted down to a thick sauce. I also added macaroni and have served with boiled rice. It's turned out really good Smile

I just threw a whole chicken in this morning with a bit of salt and pepper. Always lovely...

This (or nearly this one anyway) is my all-time favourite slow cooker recipe. It's expensive and not very good for you, so it's one for serving to guests rather than a weekly staple! Any slow cooker ribs recipe is just awesome.

More run-of-the mill favourites include chicken thighs cooked with chicken stock, onions, garlic leeks and mushrooms. Or slow cooker chilli made with stewing steak instead of mince is a winner! I used to do a lot of pulled pork when I first got a slow cooker, but got a bit sick of it in the end.

Fartniss I use pork chump steaks in my stews. Do they sell cheeks in the supermarket or are they more butchers counter? x

Pirates does the chicken need any water? I've never cooked one in a slow cooker before.

Lamb or mutton chunks (with bones and a little bit of fat) cooked in a stock with garlic, a little rosemary and a blob or two of sweet mint jelly. Bloody lovely with mashed root veg.

IDoDaChaCha · 05/09/2017 16:26

Hurty that sounds fab. Will try it. I never really cook lamb. Do you get yours from the butcher?

I love sausage and onion gravy done in ours. Sausages from the local butchers only. Onions fried stirring occasionally for 5 mins. Tsp muscovado sugar and Stir for 8 mins. Boiling Veg stock, tomato puree, flour in slow cooker add onions. Sausages into bitesize chunks, fried for 5 mins add to slow cooker. High for 1 hour low for 7. We have it with mash of course and it's my absolute favourite and a winner with everyone I've cooked it for.

HurtyTeeth · 06/09/2017 13:05

IDoDaChaCha - Occasionally I will, but I also cruise over to the meat sections in the supermarkets and see what looks good or if a cut is on offer and if so buy from there. A good long slow cook makes it all taste fab.

IDoDaChaCha · 06/09/2017 19:27

Have bookmarked thanks Wee

I love a slow cooker brisket for Sunday dinner, just sear the outside in a saucepan then chuck it in with an inch or so of beef stock and leave for 6 hours or so, then put it uncovered in the oven for the last 45 minutes or so (I put it in at the same time as the roast potatoes).

Kursk · 06/09/2017 19:35

My favorite is slow cooked squirrel stew. DH will shoot 4-5. Then olive oil, garlic, red wine, and some vegetables. It's perfect for a cold day

Chelsea26 · 06/09/2017 19:40

Pack of beef mince, frozen chopped onions and peppers (obviously fresh is fine but this is my easy sling it in version) sprinkle of thyme, couple of oxo cubes and a jar of red jalapeños, liquid and all. Stir and cook on low for 8 hours.

Best chilli ever!

hannahbanana2007 · 06/09/2017 20:02

Stupid question but for the meatballs and chilli do you cook the mince at all? Most of the recipes in my slow cooker book require meat to be browned but kind of defeats the point to me of throwing it in before work if I have to faff about frying half of it!

eyesbiggerthanmybelly.blogspot.co.uk/2010/01/slow-cooker-recipe-venison-sausage-and.html?m=1
Sausage and lentil but half the sugar

Doublejeopardy · 06/09/2017 20:20

I do meatballs and bolognese and never brown the mince. With the bolognese you need to stir it to break up the meat if you know what I mean, but it's amazing

MaMisled · 06/09/2017 20:30

My favourites are:

Chicken breast chunks, Tikka masala paste, coconut yoghurt, onion, courgette, carrot, cauliflower, aubergine, garlic, ginger, chilli and curry powder.
And.....

Cheap frying steak, red wine, gravy granules, tin tomatoes, onion, mushroom, garlic and loads of paprika. Thicken with flour and milk an hour before serving. Cheesey dumplings added to this make me almost faint with happiness!

HurtyTeeth · 06/09/2017 20:56

Wow. Squirrel stew. If your DH shoots them, are you tasked eith tje degutting and skinning? Do you keep the fur? Grey squirrels?

HurtyTeeth · 06/09/2017 20:56

*with the de-gutting..

Kursk · 07/09/2017 03:58

Normally either I or DS skins and guts them. Greys are best....a lot more meat!

DH does tan the fur, we don't like to waste anything
