Going Vegetarian

NutterlyUts · 01/04/2007 14:30

I'm seriously considering going veggie, but I'm after meal ideas to give me an idea of what can be cooked and to see if veggie food appeals to me. Right now I eat mainly chicken and only rarely eat other meat.

One of the main reasons I'm considering turning veggie is because I don't agree with the farming methods, but a side reason is I'm overweight, and I've never seen a fat vegetarian..

Does an octopus have a face? A Mussel?

colditz · 01/04/2007 22:18

Whelks, I am pretty sure, do not have a face.

grannyquackersleetlefuffychick · 01/04/2007 22:18

yum, octopus

3easterbunniesandnomore · 01/04/2007 22:18

so that is the vegetarian view...nothing wiht face?
And vegan is no animal productsa at all...
and then there are fruitarians I thinkk, that only eat fruet vegetable that has grown and is ready to be eaten, i.e droped ro somehting?

3easterbunniesandnomore · 01/04/2007 22:20

so, is the human then meant to eat eggs...unlike cowslilk, forinstance....

3easterbunniesandnomore · 01/04/2007 22:20

so, why do you decide to be vegetarian rather then forinstance vegan...taste or your feelings towards animals, etc....

colditz · 01/04/2007 22:21

But most eggs in a natural setting will have4 been fertilised, therefore will have some stage of embryo inside, therefore not (imo) vegetarian food.

colditz · 01/04/2007 22:21

You have to keep them awat from cocks.

3easterbunniesandnomore · 01/04/2007 22:22

so I was right, really one shouldn't be eating eggs...because in nature they would only lay eggs that are fertilised?

colditz · 01/04/2007 22:24

Well in nature one shouldn't be cooking one's food either, and one should probably have a few teeth missing and a tapeworm, but yes, I see your point.

colditz · 01/04/2007 22:25

i said

YOU HAVE TO KEEP THEM AWAY FROM COCKS

Tcha, this place is going reet uphill.

3easterbunniesandnomore · 01/04/2007 22:29

lol colditz...cosks as in cohaddolde doo thing, right

colditz · 01/04/2007 22:30

Yes, those too.

NutterlyUts · 01/04/2007 22:35

Oh dear lol. You leave a thread for a bit and it disintergrates!
Babygrand.. Fab advice.. I think I will try that
3easterbunniesandnomore.. I've chosen to be a vegetarian because a) I feel its healthier and b) I am worried about how animals are treated - for example as a meat eater I would never eat veal, and I never used to buy intensivly reared meat. But I appreciate this is different for other people.

Technically, somebody who doesn't eat meat but does eat milk, eggs and fish is a lacto-ovo-pisco-vegetarian. But it sounds like nonsense.
I am a vegan who eats honey, so what does that make me? An api-vegan? Except that gives the impression that I eat bees

arcticwind · 01/04/2007 22:55

"Eggs are periods"

I am NEVER going to eat one again

NutterlyUts · 01/04/2007 22:56

Eggs might be periods, but they taste good. Mmm Dippy egg

are you all argueing over whos the biggest bestest veggie!lol
viva and vegetarian society has great tips.when i had ds i printed out loads of info from them as although ive been veggie for ages i knew people would question my children being veggie so used the print outs to say look,im doing it properly, hes fine!

Greenleeves · 01/04/2007 22:59

Well, actually you do "give birth to a body part" every time you have a period, albeit a very small one. They are your body cells, are they not? So as much a part of the original body as a chicken liver or a pig's trotter.

Greenleeves · 01/04/2007 23:01

I cracked open an egg the other day to make ice cream for my children, and there was a huge bright red blood clot in it . So would it have been "vegetarian" for me to eat that egg? I think not.

grannyquackersleetlefuffychick · 02/04/2007 08:20

oh, you and your COCKS, colditz, tsk, tsk

grannyquackersleetlefuffychick · 02/04/2007 08:24

my reasons for being a lact-ovo-pisco (thankyou tooticky) vegetarian are very personal. basically i don't want to eat anything i can have some sort of relationship with. for example, i can go into a field and chat to a cow or horse but no matter how much i try with an egg or whelk i don't get a response.

elasticbandstand · 02/04/2007 08:43

i was a vege for 14 years and swore by rose elliott's bean book.
don't really like quorn but loads of people do.
tofu is quite good, if you cook it til it's fim.

Colditz...how you were able to read that goggledoo I written there last night...blinking good wine that was, lol...I mean, I had to take a moment to try to work out what I was trying to say then, lol!

NutterlyUTs....if I gave the impression I am somehow "against" vegetarism or wonder why anyone would choose it...honestly...no, I can completely understand why vegeterism is much better and healthier, etc....and yes, animals are badly treated...but they are equally badly treated for milkproduction (if you want some links for that, got some on my PC< lol), too...not sure about the "eggfarming", have not looked into that...and yes, I want to try to change my own eating, but not ready yet to make these big steps (I used to be a vegitarian for a few years in my younger years, but basically because I just didn't like meat, not for animal rights reasons, etc...but then I started to miss meat and I started eating it again....)!
Anyway, I wish you well!
