How do you like your porridge?

TwinkleTwinkleLittleEtoile · 14/08/2017 11:08

In an attempt to wean myself off unhealthy breakfast cereal, I'm trying to eat more porridge. But I find it impossible to eat just porridge, I need to put something on/in it. So far I've tried maple syrup, golden syrup, jam, but are things like that totally defeating my attempt at a healthier breakfast?

What do you like? I like most things, but am a bit funny about banana in porridge - bananas and hot don't go together!

With honey,almonds and raspberries.

EssentialHummus · 14/08/2017 11:15

Half milk, half water, raisins, bit of cinnamon.

I hear frozen berries mixed in are yummy too, haven't tried.

Abracadabra12 · 14/08/2017 11:17

Have you ever tried it with a bit of nut butter? I really like it with hazelnut butter, raisins and cinnamon

I have porridge with oatbran mixed in (I get mine from Sainsbury). Heat on the stove with half water, half soya or oat milk.
I like cinnamon, banana, apple jam or flavoured soya 'yoghurt' in mine.

For me,
large bowl
big portion of chopped peaches (canned is fine) or whole blueberries mostly fill bowl
mix with porridge oats to fill bowl
add full fat milk
cook 2.5 minutes in microwave
add peanut butter & jam.

I have porridge oats cold with milk and bananas and/or berries. or with greek yoghurt instead of milk. also sometimes add chopped nuts or seeds

This sounds gross but I really like porridge once its been reheated. So cook it, let it cool then reheat, it makes it thincker and creamier. Then add frozen mixed berries.

TwinkleTwinkleLittleEtoile · 14/08/2017 15:29

Some good ideas, thanks.

Never tried with nut butter, but I think I have some almond butter languishing in the fridge somewhere, so might give that a go tomorrow. I think I've got some frozen berries too. Hadn't thought of adding yoghurt either. I like it creamy, so that could be a goer.

diced apple and cinnamon is a fav here.

Maverick66 · 14/08/2017 21:29

Porridge such as Mornflake or Heritage brand.
30g cover with boiling water in saucepan and simmer for few minutes.
Add fruit if choice I like berries or tinned pears a dollop of sir yogurt.
Alternatively
Over night oats.
Again 30g of oats.
Layer oats fruit and almond milk leave overnight in fridge and eat cold in morning.
You can also layer with yogurt or any milk.

I like super plain porridge. Bag of steel cut oats. Skimmed milk plus a drop of water. Cooked on the job to an overly dry paste.

But it doesn't like me. Comes out the other end quite soon after like a dollop of wet concrete.

Tried to start a healthier regime last September when I went back to school (teacher) as I never eat breakfast. First day of term I had a small bowl of porridge and felt all smug. Just about to walk out the door when I had to rush to the bathroom. End result was that I very nearly missed the bus and started the first day of term feeling wobbly of bowel and generally a bit flustered. Blush

Kids and DH eat it often for breakfast in winter. I make it like mine only I don't overcook it so it's creamier and I use all milk, no water. Usually drop in a handful of sultanas, chopped dried apple, dried cranberries or something similar.

*hob not job!

Blondielongie · 14/08/2017 21:35

Honey and cinnamon ❤

BaDumShh · 14/08/2017 21:36

A teaspoon of cacao powder to make it chocolatey, and nut butter drizzled on top. Heaven!

EggysMom · 14/08/2017 21:41

Sugar. It's not healthy, but what the heck!

Equal quantities of milk, water and porridge. Ping, stir, repeat, until it's climbing out of the bowl. Stir in sugar. Justify it by knowing you'll use those calories just getting son out of bed and ready for the day. Enjoy. Grin

Embarrassed89 · 14/08/2017 21:42

1 teaspoon of grass fed butter to make it creamier, cacao powder (sometimes add cacao nibs too), chia seeds, and flax seeds

Tastes like chocolate but cacao is much better for you!

FlaviaAlbia · 14/08/2017 21:43

Very thick with salt, yum.

Sweet variety would be honey and cinnamo with sultanas or sliced banana.

dementedma · 14/08/2017 21:45

As far away from me as possible. It is the devil's vomit. Even the smell of it makes me retch.

poppym12 · 14/08/2017 21:47

Oats mixed with half water, half soya milk. Soya protein powder and ground flaxseed added. Love it. Unfortunately, flaxseed doesnt like my digestive system so I can't add it very often.

Katescurios · 14/08/2017 21:48

Have you tried it cold, look up overnight oats recipes.

  • applesauce, raisins and cinnamon
  • make up a batch of fruit compote and freeze it in portions, great for adding to porridge/yoghurt or making up a quick crumble/cobbler/pie. We just made a batch at the weekend -plums, blackberries, blueberries, Bramley apples, a couple of table spoons of water and 2 table spoons of maple syrup or honey then simmer till soft.
BobbinThreadbare123 · 14/08/2017 21:49

Made with soya milk, good squirt of honey. Simple and delicious.

EsmeWeatherwax · 14/08/2017 21:49

Cooked on the hob in water with salt, until quite thick. Tablespoon of cream in the bowl. No sugar, no sweetness, no milk.

Mouth watering at the thought!

AliCat36 · 14/08/2017 21:53

Blueberries & banana is my favourite. Make the porridge with semi-skimmed milk, 2 mins in the microwave, a good stir & let it thicken a bit then add the fruit. Solid fruit though, I don't like frozen or compote, too soft & turns to mush as you mix it in. Yuk.
