How do you like your porridge?

TwinkleTwinkleLittleEtoile · 14/08/2017 11:08

In an attempt to wean myself off unhealthy breakfast cereal, I'm trying to eat more porridge. But I find it impossible to eat just porridge, I need to put something on/in it. So far I've tried maple syrup, golden syrup, jam, but are things like that totally defeating my attempt at a healthier breakfast?

What do you like? I like most things, but am a bit funny about banana in porridge - bananas and hot don't go together!

I feel your pain lockedout. Do you by any chance suffer from IBS? I do. I'm thinking that it's the insoluble fibre that causes the rapid exit and as porridge has both soluble and insoluble fibre, it's a bit of a gamble with IBS as soluble fibre is necessary to calm the gut.

mommybunny · 14/08/2017 21:57

I like it with coconut milk, a pear and a banana and find I don't need to add sugar or honey or maple syrup. Yum.

NorthernPowermouse · 14/08/2017 22:29

Completely with you on bananas OP, they don't go at all!

Blueberries and chopped hazelnuts, grated apple with sultanas, honey and hazelnuts, stewed rhubarb, strawberries or raspberries are all favourites here. DS prefers it plain though.

Ginmakesitallok · 14/08/2017 22:31

Cooked with water, plenty of salt and a dash of milk in the bowl. Can't stand sweet porridge - I blame my Presbyterian granny

abigailgabble · 14/08/2017 22:40

Recently I've been enjoying it with salt and believe it or not I am definitely not pregnant!

Otherwise I love honey and nut butters. I once out white chocolate in and it was lovely but I did feel like shit for the rest of the day as one does when one peaks one's blood sugar too soon Blush

I remember old men having porridge drawers when we were stationed in the North East of Scotland. Literally a drawer of porridge which they cut a piece off like cake and ate.

Or have I made this up (this was almost 35 years ago)?

one2three4five · 14/08/2017 23:02

Unsweetened almond milk, raisins, agave syrup topped with sliced banana. Sometimes substitute the raisins for natural peanut butter, but try not to do that too often as I could quite easily add huge amounts of it, loooove peanut butter!

ReinettePompadour · 14/08/2017 23:05

I like mine made into flapjacks. Grin

Mulch · 14/08/2017 23:06

Soaked over night in water. Cooked with raisins, bananas, peanut butter and a dash of full fat milk. Cinnamon to season

Giraffey1 · 14/08/2017 23:08

I make mine in the microwave with milk. When it's done I add Total yoghurt and fruit (whatever I have to hand eg blueberries, strawberries, raspberries etc) and a sprinkle of Stevia or Candarel. Yum!

TheScottishPlay · 14/08/2017 23:10

Maybe in The Broons or Oor Wullie Crazy!

CKBluebell · 14/08/2017 23:17

Made with water, not too thick with a blob of cream or brown sugar swirled in.

SillyMoomin · 14/08/2017 23:20

Made solely with single cream, 1/3 brown sugar to a lint of oats, stir on hob till thick.

Then cover with another spoon of brown sugar and a swirl of whiskey

never understood how porridge can be healthy Wink

ILoveGrammar0 · 14/08/2017 23:22

Why do you keep almond butter in the fridge?

IvorHughJarrs · 14/08/2017 23:23

I have tried for years but I really don't like it and, when I have it for breakfast, I am starving by 11.30 latest

In answer to your question, I like my porridge in the bin while I eat scrambled eggs Grin

crazycatguy · 14/08/2017 23:25

To be fair life in 80s rural Aberdeenshire was not too far removed from Oor Wullie asides the notion we didn't have the bucket to, erm, sit on....

womaninatightspot · 14/08/2017 23:27

Jumbo oats, half full fat milk/ half water pinch of salt slow cooked until thick(or if you put it together the night before you can just bring it to the boil and it's done).

Hate sweet porridge (am Scottish so not the done thing when I was young).

SuperBeagle · 14/08/2017 23:32

Traditional oats (not quick oats - they're horrible and nowhere near as good for you) soaked in water for a while, then cooked stove-top with full fat milk. Sliced banana on top.

Nothing else. No sugar, no syrup etc. All of those things defeat the purpose of having porridge over Coco Pops.

HarrietSchulenberg · 14/08/2017 23:35

Cooked with water and salt, on hob, with teaspoon of brown sugar sprinkled on top once in bowl.

Thenorthbloodywellremembers · 14/08/2017 23:40

Big dollop of peanut butter and a handful of raisins. Full fat milk and proper oats.

SnickersWasAHorse · 14/08/2017 23:40

You are all doing it wrong. You want to make it with oat milk.

Thanks, I don't think I've IBS although I've never asked a doctor about it. I never get bloated, but definitely have rather tender bowels, especially as I've got older (I'm 36...would say since turning 30 my digestion's definitely taken a turn for the worse).
I could probably train my guts to cope with a bit of daily porridge, but I don't really like it that much, I was only eating it to try and have a healthy, filling, quick breakfast. I think it was a shock to my system on that one occasion.

YNK · 15/08/2017 00:07

Made in microwave with cold water and plenty of salt.
A dash of milk when cooked!
Perfection!

midsomermurderess · 15/08/2017 16:54

In the microwave, with milk, a pinch of salt and a chopped-up banana. Might add some Greek yogurt before eating it.

Doje · 15/08/2017 19:42

With banana and sultanas!!

I have a massively sweet tooth, but I love this more than porridge with golden syrup or maple syrup or a layer of crunchy brown sugar.
