DS is getting very keen on independence in meal times and really likes to have something to hold and eat himself. I seem to keep giving him bits of rusk which isn't ideal....so what else does anyone suggest?

No teeth yet but hard gums so I guess he could get through quite a bit!

My ds is similar age, and he loves toast, bread & butter, bananas, baby breadsticks and mango!
HTH!

Ricecakes, pitta bread, any soft fruit cut into slices, fingers of cooked vegetables
Also if you feel that you are up to coping with the mess, my daoughter tried to eat evertyhing with her fingers - mashed potatoes, casserole, you name it she tried it if I wasn't quick enough at moving the bowl/plate out of her reach.

My DD (8 months) is currently into toast and grated cheese. You could try hummus on toast, cream cheese on toast. I tried cucumber but it just keeps falling out of her mouth, it's too hard. Bits of banana, soft pear or other soft fruits. She had half of her brothers fish cake yesterday as a finger food. Hard boiled egg is one my HV keeps telling me. Bits of cooked pasta when he gets the hang of it?

don't wish to alarm you but sesame is a really common allergen and if you are at all worried about that side of things I would leave the hummus until DS is 1. (my DS loved it but became allergic)however if it isn't a concern its a great idea

Bread sticks are a good one along with rice cakes. Both of ours have loved the soft fruit that's around at this time of year - strawberries, nectarines, peaches, pear, all of them gorgeous....mmmmmmmm
I found that banana is great until they have touched it too much then it becomes slippery!! At breakfast even a few cheerios ( I know, I know they are sugar coated - bad mummy) is good to keep them amused while you get the toast going....
