I am doing the food myself, for about 15 to 20 children (aged 0 to 6) and maybe 30 adults?

So far I have thought of:

-strawberries half dipped in chocolate
-tiny pinwheel sandwiches - with cream cheese? any other fillings?
-grapes
-olives
-vegetable bits to dip in hummus and sour cream

I am a bit stuck for easy foods for the adults. My intention is that this will be the children's main meal, with enough things for the adults to nibble, so that they only need a snack later on, type of thing. We don't eat meat or fish. Come and tell me what was a hit at your party, please

fruit shoots

MuminBrum · 18/03/2007 21:25

Scuse me, you'll be needing party rings and pink wafers.

ledodgy · 18/03/2007 21:26

Homemade pizza?

ScummyMummy · 18/03/2007 21:26

What about going back to the 70s and doing a delberately retro cheesy hedgehog thingy?

nickytwotimes · 18/03/2007 21:26

ooh, ooh, and some creamola foam!

Fanko · 18/03/2007 21:27

Why not make a huge veggie chilli or curry for the adults then serve with rice or naan. This way you can make it before the party and it's minimal effort.

crunchie · 18/03/2007 21:29

BTW F&Z that so far sounds a bit poncey IMHO

Why bother with pinwheel sandwiches as they are a fag to make and will only get left onthe plate

Jam sandwiches in white bread went down well today, as did mini fairy cakes (buy those petit four cases) I made 100 using 250 g butter/250g sugar/250g flour and 4 eggs (actually I made about 10 extra full sized cajes too I topped the cakes with lurid icing (red, blue, green, yellow) and loads of various sprinkles (pure sugar). Strangely not one was left

Crisps are also good

FrannyandZooey · 18/03/2007 21:29

Thanks to people who are taking this seriously

I like the hedgehog idea - OMG is that really retro then? Would it still be ok if I did it non-ironically?

Cherry tomatoes - check

homemade pizzas - check (mini bite sized ones, do you reckon? with slightly larger bite sized ones for adults?)

OP posts:
MuminBrum · 18/03/2007 21:29

Seriously though. Spanakopita, but not as a big pie, as dear little filo pastry parcels.
Sausage rolls with veggie sausage.
Stuffed mushrooms/cherry tomatoes.

ledodgy · 18/03/2007 21:30

Yeah you could make full size pizza for the adults and for the children if you can be arsed you could cut the dough with biscuit cutters and make mini star pizzas or the like.

MuminBrum · 18/03/2007 21:31

I don't think anyone will be able to tell if the cheesy hedghog is ironic and retro or not, unless you are wearing an Abigail's Party hostess gown and referring to the cocktail sticks as "cheesy pineapple ones".

princesscc · 18/03/2007 21:31

This is our latest hit for a dip. Its more of an adult one, but it's damn good! 500g philli cheese, 500g spinach, 1 clove garlic, 1 packet dry onion soup, 1/4 cup dbl cream, 3/4 cup mayo, l juice of lemon, 1 chopped onion. Mix it all together and put it in hollowed out bread (like ciabatta or similar texture). It is very green, but as someone said last time we had it 'how can something this green, taste this good!'

FrannyandZooey · 18/03/2007 21:31

oh right it is only COLD BUFFET food pls

littlelapin the mozz things on sticks sound fab!

Crunchie I love pinwheel sandwiches, they make it look special and IME they all get eaten

erm what was the poncey comment about? What has that got to do with anything? It's not a dinner at a working men's club, it is my son's party and this is the sort of food we like.

Tartex for sandwiches?
Homemade breadsticks?
Savoury biscuits cut into fun shapes?
Mini pizzas?
And you can never have too much fruit!

catASTROPHE · 18/03/2007 21:32

well...we had DSs party today and had a lovely time.

We had...

A big cheese platter, cut up veggies, crackers, home made salmon dip (can give you the recipe, but you said you were vegie soo...?) and drinks, followed by

Kids meal (was 4.30 by this stage)
Home made mini pizzas - tomato paste, sweetcorn, ham and cheese on muffins
home made potato and sweet potato wedges
fruit salad (this was by far the most popular!)
then fairy bread and little iced cupcakes

meanwhile the adults had scones and jam and cream and tea and coffee - they were a big hit and very quick to make. I made half plain then added dates to the 2nd half of the mix.

And then we had birthday cake.

I also have an easy vegie bean/guacamole dip recipe and a spinich dip recipe if they would help.

I really tried not to overcater btw, and still had loads left over as the kids didn't eat that much, so remember not to make too much!

PanicPants · 18/03/2007 21:32

Definitly cheese and pineapple - healthy and an old favourite.

But I like your list - and I would add bowls of fruit like raspberries/bluberries/blackberries, sliced apples, orange segments etc

Beauregard · 18/03/2007 21:33

Franny for the less intelligent of us ,WTF is a pin wheel sandwhich?

FrannyandZooey · 18/03/2007 21:33

Star pizzas oooh ooh (prob too much faff tbh)

adult dip thing - great

filo things and stuffed things - I am lazy, did I mention that

Abigails party type gown oooh ooh - oh hold on, you're saying that would be BAD?

OP posts:
ledodgy · 18/03/2007 21:33

Bake some small potatoes scoop out middle then mix with grated cheese put back in oven until all lovely and melted these taste lovely cold too and make nice finger foods.

FrannyandZooey · 18/03/2007 21:35

Ah pin wheel sandwich

(well crunchie is right it is a big poncey thing to do but always a hit and impresses parents )

get the bread and cut off crusts, roll out with rolling pin, spread with filling and roll up

ideally wrap in plastic wrap and leave in fridge for half an hour

then cut into tiny little slices so you get a spiral with the filling in the middle

OP posts:
MuminBrum · 18/03/2007 21:36

No, F&Z, I'm not saying it would be bad at all, I think it would be fab ... but remember how the play ends up!
You're right about getting off the narky threads - I've been called "sweet" on one and I don't know whether I feel , or .

FrannyandZooey · 18/03/2007 21:37

Homemade breadsticks - check (we have great recipe with cumin seeds on)

Savoury biscuits - really? Do you think so?

Cold baked potatoes? Are you sure??
