Vanilla essence/extract

I have a few recipes that call for vanilla essence, but all i have is vanilla extract. I can't get the essence in any of my local stores for some reason, but they all stock the extract. Anyway, can i use the extract in the recipes instead? What is the difference in strength? What adjustments do i have to make in general (novice cook and baker)!!!
TIA

extract is better as it's extracted from acutal vanilla
'essence' can be artificial flavouring

just use a drop of the stuff you have - no need to fuss re altering quantities etc.

Thanks Mrs Badger....could probably have asked my mum but did not want to give her an even worse impression of my knowledge (or lack thereof). She always tells me she told me these things years ago, but........
