Just moved here and getting bearings - need a decent (in all senses of the word) alternative to Waitrose for meat.

Thanks.

Just outside Andover is a village called Appleshaw with a butchers called Bennetts. There used to be an abbatoir but that ceased to exist and now the meat comes in from a slaughterhouse in Wales. There is a packaging plant attached to the place still.

its excellent quality and fantastic personal service. They wrap things seperately for freezing, cut to size for things like stroganoff or sirloin and take it out to the car. Prices vary, some compare to supermarket basic and others to the top of the range like 'taste the difference'

Well, went to JR yesterday - hope the beef is as good as it looks. Have just come back from Romsey famers market - yummy! Thanks for all those tips everyone.

Balls · 04/03/2007 21:51

Just wanted to say that we really like Dairy Barn Farm Shop in Houghton. They do rare breed meat and you can see some of the animals in a kind of farmyard area when you visit. If we lived a bit nearer I'd shop there regularly, but we're a bit too far away so we tend to mail order from Riverford instead. Hope this helps!

NappiesGalore · 06/03/2007 14:36

ooh yes - Drummonds on the corner near Bradbeers/the Hundred in Romsey. they make the best bacon ever ever ever. and everything else is v v v good from there too. love it. get order in early for their turkeys at christmas too

NappiesGalore · 06/03/2007 14:38

i only got fish from kimbridge farm shop once and it made me hurl. never tried it again...

NappiesGalore · 06/03/2007 14:44

madora - just read that youre in lockerley...snap! tis spooky to think of a mner living so near (i am the only mner in the village! -a la little britain...see what i did there?? im pretty funny, me)

Balls · 07/03/2007 21:55
