Mozzarella Question!

Hi people - this may seem a funny question but ... not bought any fresh mozzarella for donkeys years - got some from Sainsbury's yesterday, and it smells a bit strong - which I would expect from something like brie, but not mozzarella. Is it normal for fresh mozzarella to be whiffy, or has it gone off?

I've never detected even a whiff from mozzarella, it's normally bland

if it is the buffalo milk stuff it may be a little more pungent than usual. Does it have any whey (liquid) with it in the pack, if so is that curdled or lumpy?

Try a tiny bit, you'll soon know if it's gone off

I have had to chuck 2 pots of the Jamie Oliver Buffalo stuff out that I got from Sainsbury's - I thought it was off and so did the other 4 people I forced to taste it - it tasted a bit fizzy (IUKWIM!!) and not at all like it normally does - just lush!!

Take it back to Sainsbury's or write the bar code down and ring them - they do not take any complaints without the barcode (thats what they told me after I phoned to whinge about the fizzy Mozarella and the fishy sardines I had bought!!)

The Sainsbury's mozzarella actually stinks from the outside of the packet, so not very keen to open it and smell the horrors within, let alone taste it. My local Sainsbury's is quite nice, so I shall pop along and ask for a refund/credit note. I got some mozzarella from Tescos last night, and no whiff at all

fishy sardines ?!!

Twinkie · 23/06/2004 10:52

Fish isn't actually supposed to smell fishy if it is really fresh - these we had to put in a bag in a bag in a bag in a bag and then douse them in Vim before we even dared soil the wheelie bin with them!!
