Ok, I've got bored of seeing giant brain-like slabs of this at the local fish shop. What's it for?

eat

bluejelly · 23/02/2007 21:47

It's actually really yummy and dead cheap. Roll in flour and 'pan fry'

LadyTophamHatt · 23/02/2007 21:48

Mmmmmmm it's lovely!

Sparkler1 · 23/02/2007 21:48

Ew!!! It's gross, that's what it is. My step dad loves the stuff. Fries it up - it stinks the house out for days. Barf!

kiskidee · 23/02/2007 21:49

also really good with egg.

i am planning on making fish cakes with some i have in the freezer.

suzycreamcheese · 23/02/2007 21:50

its fish eggs..baby fishes..ohh

zephyrcat · 23/02/2007 21:51

Ooh I could live on cod roe!! Either from the chip shop or straight from the tin!

NotQuiteCockney · 23/02/2007 21:51

Oh, so you cook it like fish?

It looks gross.

Is this a particularly 'english' thing to eat? Like jellied eels?

I guess you can just heat it through in the frying pan. It comes battered from the chip shop, but is also nice just cold from the tin.

Ah, see, our fish place has giant slabs of it, alongside the other (smoked?) fish. It's white. Dunno if it's cooked.

Ok, the idea of tinned cod roe has me feeling a little green around the gills tbh.

DH is so not actually English, is he - he thought you could use it to make taramasalata. (Could you?)

OP posts:
kiskidee · 23/02/2007 22:21

can't see why not. taramasalata is roe.

no, it isn't particularly english, caviar anyone?

elclose · 23/02/2007 22:23

i think they do use it to make taramasalata but they put colouring to make it pink.

NotQuiteCockney · 24/02/2007 07:51

I did a search on taramasalata, and it needs smoked cod roe. No idea if this stuff is smoked.

Yeah, the pinkness is definately dye, though - proper taramasalata isn't very pink at all.

Hard roe is the unfertilised female eggs, soft roe (white in colour when cooked) is the sperm of the male cod

wowfudge · 23/06/2018 12:28

I love taramasalata - you could probably home smoke cod role in order to make it.

LapsedHumanist · 24/06/2018 04:16

I use it to make stuffed peppers sometimes. Really lovely light meal.

Split and de-seed a couple of red Romano peppers. Brush with a little olive oil. Mix cod roe with some breadcrumbs and chopped herbs ( if you can be bothered, some finely diced and lightly sautéed courgette is a nice addition). Stuff peppers with mixture, drizzle with a little olive oil. Bake at 180(fan)/200 for 30-40 mins or until peppers are soft and melting.
