Just about to finish this off in the oven and was wondering what goes with it. Curry-based flavourings so is rice the usual accompaniment?

Does it have potaotes in it? I have no idea as am not from SA but perhaps a naan-type bread?

yoyo · 23/02/2007 18:06

Minced lamb, apple, raisins, almonds, chutney (!), onion, lemon juice and curry powder. Topped off with an egg and milk custard-type sauce.

Have got pitta or garlic bread.

yoyo · 23/02/2007 18:11

think SA yellow rice has tumeric, lemon rind, cinammon, raisins, salt, sugar, butter + white rice but I have no idea about the proportions, sorry.

Looks a bit like a Nigel Slater one. Okay am off to prepare.

Many thanks. Hope it tastes okay now (on a one new recipe a week phase).

this brings back bad memories i grew up in sa and my mum used to make it and it is disgusting!! its the topping i cant stand and the sweetness yuck!!!
foxinsocks you can buy melktert from this sa shop near charring cross station and also in a shop in putney on upper richmond road and alo in this sa cafe in purley, this will be totally useless info unless you live in or around London/surrey

yoyo · 23/02/2007 22:38

It was lovely! Not sweet at all. DD2 had eaten earlier but tucked in to a huge plate of it. The "yellow rice" was perfect.

We always had bobotie with yellow rice and raisins in it - just thinking about it brings back such memories..........
anyway, here is a recipe for melktert.

JoshandJamie · 24/02/2007 19:05

Yellow rice is the perfect side, but even more important is Mrs Balls Chutney.

Coolmama · 24/02/2007 19:06

ooooh yes - how could I have forgotten that?
