Can anyone recommend anything to keep me awake that doesn't contain caffeine. I'm allergic to it and I'm on day 4 of DS being awake through the night and crying because he has chickenpox. I'm trying to let DH have as much rest as possible as I'll be nightshift at the weekend and he'll be at home with the little guy.

Are you still awake? Pepsi Max 2 litre bottle and lots of chocolate?

Sorry, just read that you don't take caffeine. Hmmm ... I'm a bit stuck there apart from suggesting lots of sugary things.

Guarana (sp?) is supposed to be a natural stimulant.

i was going to say as much bright sunlight as possible, but it's pretty cloudy today..

Yes strangerthanfiction, I'm still awake. I work shifts so v.little sleep doesn't bother me too much as I can usually catch up on my days off but thanks to the pox, I'm not getting any days to myself. Oh well, back to the ironing then.

guarana, although herbal, contains caffine so you probably wouldnt want to take it.

You could try ginseng, gives you a natural energy boost. or Jan de Vries Vitality Essence.
both from health shop.

gscrym I also have to avoid caffeine in all forms, even chocolate, and I just don't think there is any chemical alternative. I've learned to stay awake/fight tiredness on my own energy. It's hard, but I've no other choice.

I feel like guarana doesn't cotain cafffeine exactly but some other stimulanat which, in a a person sensitive to caffeine, would have a similarly negative effect. And I'm loath to try ginseng for the same reason. Even the mildest stimulants have a bad effect on me. Are you specifically sensitive to caffeine, or stimulatnts in general?

gloworm · 18/06/2004 20:42

just thought i'd clarify, guarana definatly contains caffine.

ginseng isn't a stimulant, although it does help with energy levels. it helps the body cope with and adapt to changes. i can post a link if you want any more info.

Yes I'm definately allergic to caffeine and worse, disgustingly intolerant to alcohol. 1 drink and I get a migrane so bad that I'm in a dark room for 2 days and I've tried loads of different drinks without success.
