go by what the mother said

just give him sausages - they normally go down fine with 5 yr olds!

Give them sausages and mash. When dd1 (5) has friends back for tea they never eat much anyway...too busy giggling, chatting, wanting to play etc..

When dd goes to friends for tea I always offer her something like cheese on toast when she gets home assuming that she hasn't eaten anything. Don't worry if they don't eat it!

I normally do sausages or fish fingers with mash or chips and peas or beans. My ds will eat anything but other mums say their kids will also eat anything then you say I'll give them this then and they reply oh no he won't eat beans etc. - thats not anything then is it?

Just run past the mum what you intend giving and see what she says. Don't worry, it'll be fine and you get some mumsnet time whilst they get every toy you own out and leave it on the floor.................

Ask the kid if you can... we had an 8 year old last week who only ate thin chips, toast, and sausages according to his mother... he did eat the peas I put on his plate so that was one more thing to add to his list... mind you he didn't like the strawberrys and had never tried pineapple!

So what did you give them> did they eat it?
