Nutella ... who gives it to their children and what age are they?

My children did 'cookery' at nursery yesterday and came home with a Nutella sandwich each, which apparently was the most delicious thing ever!!

Am I depriving the DD's (aged 4 and 3) of their childhood by not having this stuff in the house?!!

So ... who gives the stuff to their children and from what age?

ooh nutella scrummy. we like it best on warm croissants. all my dc love it. littlest one is just 2 but theyve had it for yonks!

MrsMills · 09/02/2007 09:05

Oh yes, though i don't like it on bread, something not right about it.

We have it on pancakes (every other Thursday to be precise). Ds's are 6 and 3.

Chocolate spread was always something that we only had on holiday and I have continued with this. Despite being a chocoholic ds doesn't like it I think it is an acquired taste.

Thanks Oati - does look better - bet I can't get here in Budapest!!!!

We have an expat shop which stocks expat staples - the owner says he will try get anything - will suggest it!

foxtrot · 09/02/2007 09:49

In the interests of research i stirred a teaspoon of Nutella into my porridge this morning and am pleased to report it was rather yummy.

franca70 · 09/02/2007 09:57

foxtrot, are you trying to win the nobel prize?

oxocube · 09/02/2007 10:12

I buy it about once a year and its gone within a couple of days. My kids love it but have sadly accepted that its 'not real food' What I absolutely refuse to buy (and something which is part of the Dutch kids' staple diet here) is 'hagelslag' - basically chocolate flavoured sprinkles that Dutch kids eat on bread for breakfast. Stuff of the Devil!

Dottydot · 09/02/2007 10:16

We've got and ds1 (5) sometimes has it on crackers at the weekend as a treat.

MrsMuddle · 09/02/2007 10:49

My DC have it on pancakes - crepes, not scotch pancakes - but I don't like it on anything. I like it when it's been in the fridge, then you have a spoonful and it melts in your mouth...

pointydog · 09/02/2007 13:53

We eat it on croissants at weekend, kids sometimes on toast. And every so often I make crepes and nutella is a filling.

You don't want to end up a middle aged woman who has never eaten crepes and nutella. You really don't.

Ceolas · 09/02/2007 19:11

I've only gone and bought a jar this afternoon. It was on an aisle end in Asda!

mixed · 09/02/2007 19:34

o well, being Dutch I'm into the chocolate and the sugar sprinkles/muisjes. But never knew why it was called "muisjes" mice..after mice droppings...
Love Nutella but , like the "mice" try to eat it when dc are away. However, they have now started to climb on chairs and able to reach the "high" cupboards, so have to find a new hidingplace..

lapsedrunner · 09/02/2007 19:40

It simply doesn't exist in this household, as far as I know poor ds(4) doesn't even know about ordinary choc sauce let alone Nutella.

lapsedrunner · 09/02/2007 19:41

Mind you that Green & Blacks version does look rather good.................

Praline, socci? Its choc and hazelnuts so, yes, similar flavour.

Do Asda lurk on mumsnet and tailor their special offers, do you think?

3andnomore · 09/02/2007 21:04

I don't think you are "depriving" your child of anything, lol...with es I started chocolate spread to get medicine down....obviously ever since we have the stuff in the house, and he will have it every now and then, so, because he has it my younger 2 also will have it every now and then...probably since each of them was like 18 month....but it is an odd occasion!

edam · 09/02/2007 21:07

Mmmmmmm. Rarely buy it for reasons listed below but did actually pick up a jar the other week. Ds and I had some on toast. Then forgot it was there. Remembered it a few weeks later and discovered jar was empty - bloody dh had got there first. Grrr.

TwoIfBySea · 09/02/2007 21:12

We do the same as you Overrun, treats on the weekend. This weekend it is chocolate filled brioche rolls.

I buy Nutella now and again and yes, dts (age 5) will get it on a sandwich or stirred into their yogurt. In the summer I had bought some, they spied it in the cupboard and used it as a dip for their strawberries.

Rule of the house, everything in moderation. If anything was banned it would be the one thing they would crave. Except cheese strings, won't have them, what is wrong with a block of ordinary cheese?

Nightynight · 09/02/2007 21:15

my children have consumed industrial quantities of nutella and (wholemeal) toast since moving to continental europe.

roseylea · 09/02/2007 21:19

Doe anyone know if you can get chocolate spread with no nuts or soya in it? My dd is allergic to both so her childhood will have to be nutella-free... which means it's not fair of me to buy it and hide it in the back of the cupboard and eat it while she's at school....oh, isn't a conscience an inconvenient thing sometimes?!?

3andnomore · 09/02/2007 21:21

Hm...I think "chocoalte spread" any of them, would be without hazelnuts, anywya... Nuteela and most of teh yummy spreads aren't chocolate spreads they are hazelnut, ones
