Nutella ... who gives it to their children and what age are they?

My children did 'cookery' at nursery yesterday and came home with a Nutella sandwich each, which apparently was the most delicious thing ever!!

Am I depriving the DD's (aged 4 and 3) of their childhood by not having this stuff in the house?!!

So ... who gives the stuff to their children and from what age?

pointydog · 08/02/2007 20:49

And it's not crap! With you franca

fishie · 08/02/2007 20:50

i tried buying poncy choc spread from waitrose, made with milk rather than oil, dp say it is disgusting (i am not keen on choc). ds is 22m and has had nutella since forever, belgian childminder/choc loving daddy. whatever happened to cadbury choc spread?

Budababe · 08/02/2007 20:50

DS (5) has Nutella on bread for b'fast most mornings. I used to try to get him to accompany it with an orange and/or Babybel (seperately!!) to quash my guilt but then saw an ad for Nutella in a Australian magazine that pointed out it was full of calcuim etc and didn't feel so bad!!!

It is YUMMY on digestive biscuits too!!!

Want a yucky Nutella story? Do you? Do you?

Right - be warned!

A friend of mine used to give her almost 2 yr old Nutella on toast for b'fast and one morning (while I was there) she was cleaning her DD up after b'fast and was about to lift her out of her highchair. Noticed a bit of nutella on DD's finger - sucked it off. It wasn't Nutella. Yes - her DD had pooed and managed to get her finger into her nappy for a scratch. you have never seen anyone run to sink so fast and wash their mouth out with Fairy Liquid!!!

Hassled · 08/02/2007 20:50

Nutella and Peanut Butter on toast is like a Snickers Bar but with added carbohydrate - I can't recommend it highly enough.

foxtrot · 08/02/2007 20:52

budababe and double at fairy liquid on top

LowFatMilkshake · 08/02/2007 20:55

I bought a mega jar frm cost co when PG and ate it on Ritz crackers. DD (3) is not in the least bit interested and prefers ham or cheese sandwiches, her sweet tooth only extends as far as sweeties - who's the grown-up

Oati · 08/02/2007 21:01

I've never had nutella, nor have my kids because I wouldn't think to buy it.

I love peanut butter and bramble jelly sandwiches though - was introduced to them by an American boyfriend many yrs ago

pointydog · 08/02/2007 21:04

Would you think to buy it now, oati?

Goes down a treat

Caligula · 08/02/2007 21:06

It was on special offer in Morrisons the other day and I had to stop myself buying it.

I would just eat it all in one go.

2nervesleft · 08/02/2007 21:19

When I was a kid in the 70's I used to buy little cartons of nutella from our post office on the way home from school, (about half the amount of a McD's ketchup) it used to come with a little plastic spatula. I was an expert at getting it out of all the corners and finishing before reaching the last bin just before my house so my mum wouldn't know about it!

Happy days!

Tortington · 08/02/2007 21:22

no i dont buy it - i think chocolate on bread confuses matters.

keep good for you and bad for you apart. eat both in righly measures and even over indulge occasionally but dont stick it on a butty and pretend its ok

its kinda like me having a chocolate bar them eating a melon and thinking its ok - i really do that

Spoo · 08/02/2007 21:23

I did that too 2nerves! Stoppped at the newsagents by the bus stop on the way home. I am a nutella freak and have to force myself not to buy it as otherwise I would be spooning it out and it would last one evening.

Snowstorm · 08/02/2007 21:25

ROFL at Budababe's sticky finger story ... think I would have wet myself laughing had I been there (as long as it wasn't me it happened too ... obviously)!

I never realised that so many people had a 'thing' for nutella ... there's a LOT of people on here admitting that they couldn't keep the stuff in the house for fear of emptying the pot in a nano-second themselves. I used to be the same with peanut butter ...

don't understand the logic there custardo.

ellceeell · 08/02/2007 21:47

A few years ago Nutella came in little jars with The Simpsons on - my dc still drink out of them!

MEMsmum · 08/02/2007 23:01

Nutella still comes in little glasses with cartoon characters - my sister lives in Italy and one of the first thing we do when we visit is to hit Carrefore to see what's new - Simpsons, Incredibles (or should I say, gli Incredibili - see, developing our language skills ), Batman, as well as lesser known odd (very) Italian cartoons .. our collection is magnificent !!

Aloha · 08/02/2007 23:04

It IS the most delicious thing ever, particularly spread thick on good, crusty white bread....drool....had it first on a German exchange vist at about 12, with chocolate Nesquik for breakfast. The father was a doctor btw! I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. And the reason I don't have it in the house is precisely because it is so gorgeous!

SherlockLGJ · 08/02/2007 23:28

I never encountered Nutella as a child, so it is not on my radar, we use Nutella as a base to decorate biscuits. Not sure whether this should be or

Oati · 09/02/2007 08:51

hmmm have just checked the ingredients here

I think me amd my children can live without it thanks

Oati · 09/02/2007 08:54

and I don't mean that in a lentil weaver way, my children eat too much crap as it is (coco rocks, anyone)

Budababe · 09/02/2007 08:57

Ugh - thanks for that link Oati!

OK - am not going to get DS off it but anyone know if there is a healthier alternative??????

Will check out health food shop next time am in!

pucca · 09/02/2007 08:59

My dd loves it, but it is an occasional treat.

I love nutella too, it is best spread on plain digestive biscuits mmmmmheaven lol.

dejags · 09/02/2007 09:00
