Nutella ... who gives it to their children and what age are they?

My children did 'cookery' at nursery yesterday and came home with a Nutella sandwich each, which apparently was the most delicious thing ever!!

Am I depriving the DD's (aged 4 and 3) of their childhood by not having this stuff in the house?!!

So ... who gives the stuff to their children and from what age?

i shouldn't really tell you this, but most of the glasses in daily use in this house are ex- nutella jars.

baaaaaaad mummy

DumbledoresGirl · 08/02/2007 19:44

Oh God isn't peanut paste a gross way of describing something so delicious? Makes it sounds like wallpaper paste.

We always bicker in a friendly way about what it is called, but that is the first time I have ever seen his name for it written down.

foxinsocks · 08/02/2007 19:45

(how are you feeling DG? Both mine are now down with it and feeling very sorry for themselves)

DumbledoresGirl · 08/02/2007 19:45

Good point cremolafoam - they make lovely child sized glasses.

foxtrot · 08/02/2007 19:46

We'd have enough glasses to open a pub if we bought those size jars LOL

DumbledoresGirl · 08/02/2007 19:46

Feeling somewhat better now thanks. Clearly still ill, but on the mend, thanks. Hope your two don't suffer for long.

just realised what you have said - even your son? I thought he was getting better?

franca70 · 08/02/2007 19:47

filthymindedvixen you've just won yourself a pot of giacometta, the posher, organic, home-made like version of nutella

foxinsocks · 08/02/2007 19:48

I thought so too - it's as though he's had a recurrence - his temp has shot back up again but his energy levels seem OK (though he's fallen straight to sleep tonight, v unlike him). Dd, on the otherhand, looks terrible and just told me she feels shivery and horrible so she's at the start of it the poor thing.

Overrun · 08/02/2007 19:48

I have just started getting it recently, and they love it. We only allow it at the weekend, as a special treat as I guess it is full of sugar.
They have weetabix or porridge all week. Then pain au chocolat, or chocalate cereal and nutella at the weekend Its a way of limiting dh's intake as well

foxinsocks · 08/02/2007 19:48

glad you are on the mend DG!

FMV, who's being smug?

I can only see people on this thread who either do buy it and give it to their children - or those, like me, who don't have it in the house simply because they don't want to end up with a permanent chocolate moustache themselves

This isn't actually a food snob thread, don't try and turn it into one!

cremolafoam · 08/02/2007 20:00

my mother used to give us hundreds and thousands sandwiches for parties. and ordinary sugar sandwiches inour packed lunches.
gawd we were posh

belgo · 08/02/2007 20:04

My dh has just told me that he considers nutella to be a valid alternative to butter, therefore it goes perfectly with cheese and salami.

Apparantly he grew up on nutella sandwiches and apple juice, and well, he hasn't grown up that badly

puddle · 08/02/2007 20:06

Green and blacks choc spread on bagels and on pancakes at the weekend chez puddle.

I don't see it as any different from butter and jam or peanut butter.

cremolafoam · 08/02/2007 20:06

belgo - sorry that's mingin.
but each to their own

puddle · 08/02/2007 20:08

We didn't have sugar sarnies but dod have cinnamon toast which is a middle class equivalent - hot buttered toast spprinked with sugar and cinnamon and then toasted a bit more.

I used to love going round to my friend Julie's because we had Carnation milk sandwiches ("common" said my mum with pursed lips)

cremolafoam · 08/02/2007 20:10

ooh yes carnation milk.. do they still make that?
has to be with plastic white pan I'd have thought

Snowstorm · 08/02/2007 20:14

Belgo - the mixtures are getting ever more interesting - chocolate, cheese and salami sandwiches - the mind boggles .... Mind you, chocolate and lemon curd makes my toes curl a bit too .

Nutella and peanut butter ... does that taste a bit like a posh (slightly sickly) chocolate?

OP posts:
Snowstorm · 08/02/2007 20:16

PS. How do you have a carnation milk sandwich ... isn't it 'erm, a bit liquidy?!

foxtrot · 08/02/2007 20:30

My DC were given some Dutch sugar sprinkles to go on buttered bread - delish. Anyone know where i can get some?

Califrau i may have to try the lemon curd option [yummy emoticon]

expatinscotland · 08/02/2007 20:32

DD1 loves Nutella sandwiches!

She's 3.6.

belgo · 08/02/2007 20:33

foxtrot - my dh - the font of all knowledge - informs me they are called 'muisjes' which means little mice, referring to the fact that they remind people of mouse droppings delicious

belgo · 08/02/2007 20:34

He helpfully informs me that you can buy them in Holland.

MrsBadger · 08/02/2007 20:35

belgo the jar I have is a French one - maybe they don't advertise it quite that way here!

and condensed milk is no runnier than runny honey...
