I would like to grow something in my garden fruit or veg wise so as to have a supply of something fresh in my garden and also something fun for my ds to be involved in

what fruit or veg is practical ans fairly simple, doesn't take up too much space, could maybe be done in pots rather than the ground, and what time of year is best for these things?

I have no clue about this stuff.

Was thinking maybe tomatoes, strawberries, maybe some herbs, and any other ideas anyone can think of

I grew vegetables last yr for the first time.
Peas were easy and the children loved eating them straight from the pod
Courgettes were prolific and took up 100 times more room than I had planned, but a success.
Tomatoes I grew in grow bags and were lovely.
Runner beans were great.
Cabbage, broccoli, and rocket all eaten by slugs.
Lettuce in pots was also easy peasy .

I'm afraid I'm also clueless ,I just planted a load of seeds and watered them.

If i planted them now, is this the right kind of weather for them do you think? would like to give the peas, tomatoes and runner beans a go and also the lettuce might be good. After your experience with cabbage and brocoli i might give them a miss

I have a feeling it may be a bit early ,I just followed the seed packet instructions though so no expert.

I am rubbish and my pathetic looking leeks are still sitting out there about 1cm thick, so probably not the best person to advise you.

But rocket was really easy as was the lettuce.
