carrots, celery and onion to start
mince
red wine and stock

Thats all you need. Obviously you can then put in whatever else you want !

Yes. The alcohol in the wine cooks off. I grate carrot and stir that in after I have browned the mince. It sweetens it and you have some hidden veg (which is always good!)

yes as GM says, the wine is fine for babies/children as it burns the alcohol off. It just makes the meat really tender and tasty.

I basically fry the onions, celery, carrot (1 of each chopped really really small - in food processor if poss)then brown mince and then add wine and stock and simmer for about 1.5 hours until all the sauce is absorbed. If you want to know quantities of those I cna go and look it up (its A LOT !)

Wheelybug · 30/01/2007 09:06

I am so thick.

Tinned toms too obviously.

Anyway here's the quantities I use:

500g mince
1 large onion
1 carrot
1 stick celery
500 ml beef stock
375 red wine
2 x 425g tinned toms
1 tsp of sugar

So you do as I said below, but add toms and sugar at same time as stock and wine ! It looks like loads of liquid but if you simmer for 1.5 hours it all absorbs.

I usually make 2x and freeze rest as can always be used as lasagne filling too (or spag bol again !).

I do

500g Mince
onion
carrot grated
Mushrooms (for dd 3yrs i chop very small)

Add tom puree fry for a few mins add mushrooms and tin tomatoes and worc sauce another teaspoon of herbs.

Add milk bring to the boil. I then put into my slow cooker all day (say 9hrs)
