QP - is that you??? I've just emailed you if that's you!

(sorry for the quick hijack!)

oh, and I grate carrot into my pie.

littlemissbossy · 24/01/2007 17:15

beer? does it help your dc's to get to sleep? LOL
I also add some stock

Overrun · 24/01/2007 17:15

well you are right of course it is Cottage pie. You have most of the things that I use, I don't usually put beer in but why not, might use a splash of red, but thats probably not that authentic. What about a splash of mushroom ketchup or Worcester sauce?
I sometimes use leeks as well, and often put some cheese on top of the potatoes, you don't mention spuds.

PA - This is me QP but not sure I'm the right one.. have we met?!

LittleMissB - Bloody hope so, the gin hasn't worked on DS yet, so thought I'd try beer... 18 months and only ever slept through the night twice.

Aaa Overrun, the potatoes. Of course, that's it! Love the idea of Worcester, Worstershi...Lea and Perrins.

OMG - sod putting the beer in the pie - you need it

Overrun · 24/01/2007 17:23

Without the potatoes I guess it is just cottage sauce lol

I grate any veg i can find into it - courgette, parsnip, celeriac, swede, sweet potato (it's also nice with sweet potato on the top instead of normal potato, or carrot and swede too). And I add peas, the only veg that most kids eat without sneering at!!!

marthamoo · 24/01/2007 17:27

Ainsley Harriot's tip is a tablespoon of brown sauce and a couple of tablespoons of soy sauce..yes I know it sounds bizarre but it really 'lifts' it - I never make it without now.

QPootle · 24/01/2007 17:31

I think you could market cottage sauce Overrrun, very farmers market dontcha think?! Def got sweet potato so maybe i could put that in with the pots and have a mixed topping. LittleM thanks for the sympathy. Must admit I'm a cheap white wine lady at heart and find it an easier way to drink the necessary volmue quickly if it's wine. Beer seems to take forever and too many trips to the loo to have any effect.

I always put in grated carrot, worcester sauce & a small can of baked beans. Sweet potato on top is lovely, too.

I'm starving now!

ComeOVeneer · 24/01/2007 17:36

Cumin adds a great flavour to it.

terrystyg · 26/01/2007 16:44

Lentils! Really add to the texture.

MrsSpoon · 26/01/2007 16:44

catsmother · 26/01/2007 18:13

Little pieces of thinly sliced lamb's kidney, if using lamb mince, are really nice if you like that sort of thing.

Skyler · 26/01/2007 18:18

Yes to baked beans!!
And cheese on top.

Skyler · 26/01/2007 18:19

And Lea and Perrins. We had it for dinner and have left overs for tomorrow.

ItsMeMellowma · 26/01/2007 18:32

Forgot about the cheese on top.....

wotzsaname · 26/01/2007 18:38

fry onion
Lean mince beef (or skim fat off normal mince)
add cup of gravy (from oxo granules - thickish)
add cup of frozen peas (sometimes carrots if i have them)
squirt tom puree
small bit of salt & pepper
simmer
put in dish
put loads of mash spuds on top.

Bake till crusty!
Eat with crsuty bread

pooka · 26/01/2007 18:44

whizz onion and carrot in magimix then soften in frying pan. Take out and then brown mince. Add marmite/stock cube. Tinned tomatoes and then baked beans (some). Sometimes mushrooms too. Mash on top. Sliced leeks, softened. Grater cheese. Voila.

pooka · 26/01/2007 18:44

Oh and a smidgen of cinnamon.

Twiglett · 26/01/2007 18:44
