i make rolls a lot. but i'm afraid i'm not very precise. (hence varying degrees of success)
usually i just cut up the dough. form them into rollish type shapes then put them in a pan taht has been buttered a bit. butter the rolls a bit. let them rise. and bake til done.
i don#t even know what gas mark i use!
yeah, i suck.

my bread maker book says:

shape into rolls and put on baking tray. leave to rise for about 45 mins
Bake in pre heated oven 180 C (gas mark 5) for 15-20 mins until golden brown.

I always find it's a bit of trial and error with rolls though

I make rolls too as a change from a loaf.

When you take out your dough put it on a lightly floured board and divide it into pieces, just by pulling pieces off the lump. As purplemonkey says you dont need to be precise. form into rolls about the size of snooker balls.
Put them on a greased baking tray, cover with a tea towel and put them somewhere warm to rise.
This usually takes 30 minutes.
Then bake in a hot oven I think its about 200 in my fan electric oven for about 10 minutes.
I like it when they semi join together and you have to pull them apart.

if you were making a loaf of bread by hand, you have to leave it rise twice - once when it's in the bowl and then once when you've shaped it into the loaf. I guess it's the same with rolls!

The dough programme has only one rising sequence unlike the loaf making one which has 2
